Introduction Who Am I? Christian Negratti Solar Car Raced with the Ben Barber Shine Runners in 2013 I have been involved with every race since I competed in 2013 In 2024 I was appointed to the foundation board of directors Education Graduated from Oklahoma State University in 2018 Bachelor Science Mechanical Engineering Career Senior Mechanical Engineer Rotating Equipment Reliability Energy Industry
Communication? Communication is defined as the exchanging of information or news Why is it important? Who is good at it? Who is usually not the best at it? Engineers What is your team made of? A large amount of future engineers
Why do people struggle with communication? Different communication styles Different languages / slang Speaking with clarity Nerves/fear of judgement Difficulty converting a complex thought into words that make sense Its not just about speaking, it is about being understood.
How do we communicate during the Race? Most teams use radios FRS, GMRS, and HAM radios are common Some teams have tried cellphone calls Not reliable, especially on cross country races Not Recommended forms of communications Bird messengers Birds are messy Smoke Signals Take too much time Cave Drawings No sun in the caves, Cars will not work there.
HAM Radios Reach out to local ham radio clubs The local clubs will be more than happy to assist. Our local club licensed my whole team!
Practice Communicating Establish a chain of communication Establish a liason Agree on the terminology Get team members used to using a radio Wait after hitting PTT button and speaking Speaking slowly and clearly Discuss the need to break numbers down to be clear 30 Thirty, Three Zero Practice using the radio in the car Ensure the driver can easily talk and listen PTT is accessible Verify that there is not any RF interference from the car
Communication is Key Most problems are not real problems. Just communication issues. Practice makes perfect. Ask out for help. People cannot help if you do not ask. Be honest and open. Don t get your feeling hurt. Sometimes you need to break the norm to get a point across
