Meteorology, the study of the atmosphere and weather processes, plays a crucial role in predicting and understanding Earth's weather patterns. This scientific field delves into meteorological phenomena, atmospheric variables like temperature and air pressure, and the impact of human activities on weather changes. Through meteorology, we gain insights into how weather systems work, enabling us to anticipate and adapt to environmental shifts to ensure our comfort and safety.

  1. 1 4/4/2025 Department of Forestry College of Agriculture Engineering Sciences Salahaddin University Subject: Meteorology Lecturer's name: Dr. Ako H. Mahmood Academic Year: 2022-2023

  2. 2 4/4/2025 Earth is the only planet in the solar system that supports life? This is because of the three physical systems on it that is, soil, water and air which provide material essential for life.

  3. 3 4/4/2025 Meteorology =

  4. 4 4/4/2025 Objective of the course 1. Students are introduced to the basics of the Earth's weather. 2. Concepts of common weather phenomena such as temperature changes, wind, clouds, rain and snow. 3. The different factors that affect the weather and the instruments that measure weather data are also addressed.

  5. 5 4/4/2025 Introduction The ability to detect weather patterns and adjust to them is important to our comfort and, sometimes, is necessary for our survival. With the different instruments designed by engineers to help meteorologists in their weather forecasts, we can understand what is going on with the Earth's weather. We can use this information to see how the Earth is changing and how human activity affects the weather.

  6. 6 4/4/2025 What is Meteorology? Meteorology is the scientific study of the atmosphere that focuses on weather processes and forecasting.

  7. 7 4/4/2025 The word meteorology is from the Ancient Greek (meteor) (-(o)logy), meaning "the study of things high in the air" Meteorology is also a branch of the atmospheric sciences which includes atmospheric chemistry and atmospheric physics, with a major focus on weather forecasting.

  8. 8 4/4/2025 Meteorological phenomena are observable weather events that are explained by the science of meteorology. Meteorological phenomena are described and quantified by the variables of Earth's atmosphere: temperature, air pressure, water vapour, , and the variations and interactions of those variables, and how they change over time. Different spatial scales are used to describe and predict weather on local, regional, and global levels.

  9. 9 4/4/2025 What is Agricultural meteorology? J.W. Smith (1916) has defined Agricultural Meteorology as Meteorology in its relation to agriculture It can be defined as the science investigating Meteorology, climates and hydrologic condition, which are significant to agriculture. In short Agricultural Meteorology is the applied branch of meteorology, which deals with the relationship between climates, weather and life and growth of the cultivated plants and animals.

  10. 10 4/4/2025 Importance or Significance of Weather Forecast in agriculture Weather and climate is a resource and considered as basic input or resources in agricultural planning , every plant process related with growth development and yield affected by weather : such effects : 1- The forecast of weather events helps for suitable planning of farm. 2- It helps in to undertake or withheld the sowing operation 3- It helps in following farm operation : A- to irrigate the plant or not B- When to apply fertilizer C- When you to start complete harvesting or withhold it

  11. 11 Some important Vocabulary which is relevant to the subject Vocabulary/Definitions air pressure: The weight of the Earth's atmosphere over an area. anemometer: An instrument that measures wind speed. atmosphere: Five different layers of air that surround the Earth. barometer: An instrument that measures air pressure. climate: The average atmospheric conditions a region tends to have over many years. humidity: The amount of water vapor in the air. hygrometer: The instrument used to measure humidity. meteorologist: A scientist who specializes in the study and forecasting of weather precipitation: Condensed water vapor that falls to the Earth's surface. troposphere: The lowest portion of the Earth's atmosphere. water vapor: Water in the gas phase that is present in the air. weather: Phenomena in the atmosphere of a planet over short periods of time, such as hours or days. wind speed: The speed of moving air.
