Importance of Monitoring in Smart Grids
Real-time monitoring in smart grids is crucial for ensuring optimal operation, enhancing grid resilience, and identifying cyber threats. SCADA systems play a key role in industrial automation by monitoring and controlling grid operations efficiently. Integration of Network Information Systems (NIS) and SCADA in smart grids enables advanced analytics and improved fault management, resulting in better decision-making and customer service.

ELEC-E8423 - Smart Grid Monitoring and Control in Smart Grids, SCADA and NIS systems Fanni S m ki 28.05.2024
Importance of Monitoring in Smart Grids Efficiency: Real-time monitoring enables optimal operation and reduces losses. Reliability: Detects faults and facilitates quick recovery, enhancing grid resilience. Security: Identifies and mitigates cyber threats. Integration: Facilitates the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) like solar and wind. 28.05.2024 Page 2
SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) Industrial Control systems (ICS) / Process Control Systmems (PCS) Combination of hardware and software used for industrial automation. SCADA helps in monitoring and controlling grid operations, both locally and remotely by collecting, recording and analyzing data. SCADA systems are used in various industrial sectors such as oil and gas, water supply etc. New technologies and AI are enabeling more efficient and sustainable systems. 28.05.2024 Page 3

NIS (Network Information Systems) Systems to manage and visualize the grid s infrastructure, assets, and their status. Functions: Benefits: Asset Management Outage Management Geographic Information System (GIS) integration Network Topology Management Improved decision-making through data analytics Enhanced asset utilization and lifespan Better customer service through precise outage information 28.05.2024 Page 6
Integration of NIS and SCADA in Smart Grids Data Sharing: NIS provides detailed asset information that enhances SCADA s monitoring capabilities. Enhanced Situational Awareness: Combined data from NIS and SCADA gives a comprehensive view of the grid s status. Improved Fault Management: Faster detection and isolation of faults through integrated systems. Advanced Analytics: Better data for predictive maintenance and load forecasting. 28.05.2024 Page 7
Security Security vulnerabilities include attacks from disgruntled employees, industrial sabotage, terrorist activities, as well as security threats due to human error, equipment failure, and natural calamity. Network and Information Security Directive (NIS-Directive) Directive (EU) 2016/1148 (in force from 8th of August 2016) The aim of the Directive is to ensure a high common level of network and information security, to improve the security of the internet and private network and information systems, to increase preparedness of Member States, and to improve cooperation between the Member States. 28.05.2024 Page 8
Conclusions SCADA help to control and monitor functions in SG through sensors, communication networks, servers, RTUs, PLCs and HMI NIS visualize accurately in real- time information of all assets in the network (what, where, how much, how many ) To prevent grid failures, it is crucial to monitor and control the system, especially as more prosumers and renewable energy resources are integrated into the grid 28.05.2024 Page 9
