Overview: JPEG XL Compression WG-04 Bill Wallace Radical Imaging Co-Chair of WG-27: DICOMweb
Problems with Existing Compression Single-bit overlay for SEG and scanned documents needs a good format Existing colour compression formats are insufficient PNG is quite slow and inefficient for DICOMweb usage GIF is lossy, and generally not usable for medical images JPEG is lossy only, 8 bit only, but is quite fast JPEG-2000 is lossy and lossless is quite slow, not well supported JPEG-LS and JPEG-Lossless do not support colour effectively Support for multi-channel lossy and lossless encoding is becoming important WG-27 DICOMweb 2
JPEG XL as a format Free to use/implement Standard format Compresses slightly better than JPEG for lossy images Compresses about the same as JPEG-2000 for lossless images Fast image decompression, similar to JPEG-LS Multiple color transfer functions Many channels, up to 32 bits, as well as float channels Single bit encoding Includes multi-frame encoding WG-27 DICOMweb 3
Changes Overview Add 3 transfer syntaxes for JPEG XL Lossless, Lossy Lossy, with no additional from JPEG Support JPEG XL in DICOMweb Use JPEG XL as a multi-frame format for DICOMweb WG-27 DICOMweb 4
Conclusions JPEG XL adds a number of capabilities and improvements to the DICOM standard, particularly in the area of colour encoding, as well as in the DICOMweb responses WG-27 DICOMweb 5
