AmSECT University Program Directors Presentation via Web-Ex Tuesday, August 6, 2013
The mission of AmSECT is to foster improved patient care and safety by providing for the continuing education and professional needs of the extracorporeal circulation technology community.
Current Problem Professional health workforce is not consistently prepared to provide high quality health care and assure patient safety Major flaws in the way CE is conducted, financed, regulated, and evaluated Current approach to CE is often characterized by didactic lectures and seminars. Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing- manufacturers take a lead role in financing provision of CE. Do companies use CE to influence professionals and increase market share?
Current Problem Health professionals and their employers tend to focus on meeting regulatory requirements rather than identifying personal knowledge gaps and finding programs to address them. Learning opportunities don t stretch from the classroom to the point of care. Professionals must continue learning: Advances in research and treatments in the field Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in caring for their patients
Continuum of Perfusion Education Employee Orientation Retirement Meetings/Journ als Training ABCP Exam
Goals Create a collaborative learning environment to increase engagement in the Perfusion community. Develop an online learning path to individualize the learning experience to focus on assignments, certifications, and other clinical knowledge based training. Centralize the learning environment to ensure consistency in objectives, evaluation and availability. Provide tracking, reporting and tools for enhanced performance.
The Solution CE efforts should bring health professionals from various disciplines together to carefully tailored learning environments. A new comprehensive vision of professional education is needed to replace the culture that now envelopes CE in health care. Establishing a national inter- professional CE institute is a promising way to foster improvements in CE for health professionals.
Competency Related Standards Competency is the demonstrated ability to fulfill the primary responsibilities for which a person is hired. Observing and measuring competency gives leaders confidence that healthcare providers are exercising care, caution, and concern for the patients. Summers & Woods (2008). Third Edition, HCPro, Inc.
