Challenges to faculty-student research Overarching How does the institution view this activity? Research? Service? Teaching? SM faculty are the only ones who have this requirement in Appendix B Adequate compensation-money/teaching credit? (e.g., research with SRF students gets teaching credit) Adequate institutional support for material costs?
Challenges to faculty-student research Summer Perception that there are fewer faculty participating Stipend (for both faculty and students) has stayed flat for years Work-life balance: some time for summer vacation Enough resources for research materials? Faculty pay docked if they were gone to attend a conference or workshop Challenges to a single deadline for summer application Can feel isolating for student if only one in department Some faculty want a longer research commitment from students
Initial suggestions for improvement More organized/transparent process for identifying which departments/faculty are sponsoring research Greater flexibility in defining research and summer schedule Tangible compensation for faculty sponsoring research (e.g., money, teaching credit, reassigned time) Rotations within departments Departments could guarantee X number of summer research spots and university provides guaranteed funds Build greater sense of community among student researchers Greater coordination with SRF
