Making History More Inclusive by Adding H- STEM Lenses As we enthusiastically begin each and every online class with lots of energy and plenty of things to share, we can all picture our students engagement, just by reading the keen interest they exhibit in discussions, emails that pass among us, and the cutting-edge questions we receive from them
Making History More Inclusive by Adding H-STEM Lenses Let s be real, not everyone likes history! Using the typical method of teaching history, many students zone out in the first week. This is how I revamped my courses to add more interest for all my students. When revising and creating my latest history courses, I decided there had to be a better way to engage my students. Enter Humanistic STEM! Each student can choose a Humanities (e.g., historical), a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math lens anywhere in the course.
Making History More Inclusive by Adding H- STEM Lenses Revamped the ancillary information by adding examples of using different lenses in announcements and discussions to made them more appealing. Let the students be imaginative and creative when choosing a research topic. So, everyone, here s your wake-up call!
Making History More Inclusive by Adding H-STEM Lenses The use of lenses promotes inclusion in the course as every student is supported intellectually and educationally not based on their interests but in the elements to which they most readily connect Source: https://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/news/good-question-why-do-we-use-cloverleaf-interchanges-on- roads/

Making History More Inclusive by Adding H-STEM Lenses Hooray! I have their attention now! This student is engaged and as excited as I am in learning all about history! Now that they can use any lens that interests them. Actual student comments to follow Source: http://clipart-library.com/clipart/1000504.htm
Student Feedback Actual student comments: I liked that expectations for the Discussion forums were set early in the class, i.e. including citations, and sources other than just using the course textbook and we could use any lens for our answers. Excellent course! I enjoyed using my lens choices for discussions and researching the topics throughout. Early level history courses are typically boring and lack substantial engagement, but Mrs. Amos managed to keep such a topic relevant, engaging, and surprisingly fun. A bonus, we got to use different lenses in the course. Online only courses tend to lack engagement and substance, however Mrs. Amos was able to overcome that and present a course that was still engaging and relevant. The ability to use a technology lens kept me engaged. I enjoyed how during each module assignment the instructor provided us with videos of the development growth of the aviation industry using various lenses. It was so cool that we could use any lens to explore and research a topic in this course!

Making History More Inclusive by Adding H-STEM Lenses By now your online students are starting to connect the history of the past to the world today. The use of H-STEM lenses makes it easier for them to understand the relationship of events to their own interests. -Good Job!
