  1. Adding a MATLAB Component to an Engineering Dynamics Course Rebecca Paulsen Edwards Department of Physics Southwestern University

  2. Southwestern University Small Liberal Arts University (1500 undergraduate students) Department of Physics graduates about 10 students a year Engineering Dynamics Upper level physics elective Enrollment: ten students

  3. Goals Teach Matlab alongside Dynamics curriculum Incorporate as much current classroom curriculum as possible into each week s Matlab activity

  4. Student Learning Outcomes Students will be able to Identify opportunities to employ computation as a tool in solving dynamics problems Develop a simple script which accurately solves a given problem/performs a specific task Perform the following specific computational skills: using loops and conditional statements, reading a dataset from a file, performing math tasks with arrays, creating graphics

  5. Activity Format Begin with hand calculations (brief) Introduce computational component Guided coding activity Questions related to content and/or computational component

  6. Challenges University had only ten Matlab seats How to create problems which are challenging on the content side but accessible on the computational side No lab period for this class meant limited time

  7. Summary Positive student feedback Good departmental feedback Will build on this next time class is offered (this spring)
