When? 1440-1450 1440: Johannes Gutenberg experimented in France 1450: Came back to Germany with an upgraded design ready for commercial use (metal and individual blocks)

Who? Johannes Gutenberg Wang Chen (wood model/serendipity)
How? Based on Screw-Type Wine Presses Metal block type on flat wooden plate (lower platen) Apply ink to type Sheet of paper on top Upper platen brought down- two plates press the paper and type together
