Department ETI Elektrotechnik und Informatik TVD Technical Vocational Didactics The Janus-Face of Engineering Working Engineering Working and social supervision The Function of the Leonardic Oath ? Why Leonardic Oath ? Curriculum Development using the Leonardic Oath General Aim: Action-orientation by using PBL-characteristics General Result: Not only the product/plan, also the reflection- process Curriclum-structure: Not discipline-oriented, but reflexive task- oriented Curriculum-Development: Curriculum-work as continued process Prof. Dr. phil. (Henry Ford) Social supervision will be steering by good feeling ! Engineering-working and social supervision Prof. Dr. phil. Ralph Dreher www.tvd-edu.com dreher.tvd@uni-siegen.de

[...] We've opened millions of new acres for oil and gas exploration in the last three years, and we'll open more. (Barack Obama, 2012) Social supervison will be steering by personal/national advantage ! Engineering-working and social supervison Prof. Dr. phil. Department ETI Elektrotechnik und Informatik TVD Technical Vocational Didactics Technology is the result of specific decisions, precipitated by a special group at a special location to a special time for their own purpose. (Wajcman 1994) Who else must be educated to formulate explanations as this special group, which is professionalised to create the technical solution? Engineering-working and social supervison Prof. Dr. phil. Ralph Dreher www.tvd-edu.com dreher.tvd@uni-siegen.de
Department ETI Elektrotechnik und Informatik TVD Technical Vocational Didactics To understand the necessity, that educated engineers must be trained to explain and justify their solutions, the Leonardic Oath will become a benchmark for Curricula in Engineering Education. UNESCO Engineering Initiative 2012: Engineering plays an important role in addressing the complex challenges of our world: Improving and strengthening engineering at universities, engineering capacity-building, Engineering education towards sustainable development, attainment of internationallly agreed development goals. Function of the Leonardic Oath Prof. Dr. phil. Ralph Dreher www.tvd-edu.com dreher.tvd@uni-siegen.de
Department ETI Elektrotechnik und Informatik TVD Technical Vocational Didactics Every Study-course of Engineering must be based on the idea that engineers will be educated to use their technical knowledge with their design- responsibility oriented towards the principles of ethical Legitimation, sustainability and societal checkability. Function of the Leonardic Oath Prof. Dr. phil. Ralph Dreher www.tvd-edu.com dreher.tvd@uni-siegen.de
Department ETI Elektrotechnik und Informatik TVD Technical Vocational Didactics Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Who will dig under the wall, will be entombed by the wall. Study without desire spoils the memory, and it retains nothing that it takes in. If you find from your own experience that something is a fact and it contradicts what some authority has written down, then you must abandon the authority and base your reasoning on your own findings. I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do. The depth and strength of a human character are defined by its moral reserves. People reveal themselves completely only when they are thrown out of the customary conditions of their life, for only then do they have to fall back on their reserves. Why Prof. Dr. phil. Ralph Dreher www.tvd-edu.com dreher.tvd@uni-siegen.de Leonardic Oath ?

Department ETI Elektrotechnik und Informatik TVD Technical Vocational Didactics Curriculum work as continous process Prof. Dr. phil. Ralph Dreher www.tvd-edu.com dreher.tvd@uni-siegen.de
Department ETI Elektrotechnik und Informatik TVD Technical Vocational Didactics What will be needed? University and Industry must come together to find realistic and good tasks; Engineering Educators must be trained to realize and to moderate the part of Reflection; All involved partners (Educators, Industry, Adminstration) must understand, that Curriculum - work is a continued process ( panta rhei ); Mentors must be trained and work between the Enginnering Educator and the students to support the case-study, to help in special moments for learning during the task, to moderate at eye-level during the case-work, to help finding the next case.
