  1. Laney ESOL Guided Self- Placement A placement test becomes an enrollment strategy.

  2. Background Guided Self-Placement (GSP) was developed in response to AB705. Current GSP is the product of a process which began in Spring 2017 included research into the former placement system Slowly phased out old placement tests, replaced it with GSP face to face and then moved entire GSP process online as of Fall 2020. The Laney GSP has been well received at California Teachers of English for Speaker of Other Languages (CATESOL) conferences and by the RP Group The Laney GSP supports the two first pillars California Guided Pathways initiative Clarify the path Enter the path

  3. Steps in the GSP process 1. Orientation to the process (online or face-to-face) 2. Exploration of levels (online or face-to-face) 3. Interaction with reading (online or online with face-to-face help) 4. Production and comparison of writing samples (online) 5. Selection of course before seeing a counselor or making a schedule (online or online with face-to-face help) *Throughout this process, students have the opportunity to parachute out. That is, request help.

  4. A quick look at the Process https://laney.edu/esl/

  5. How does this compare to our old process? Guided Self-Placement Placement Writing and Grammar Tests Vs Promotes student agency. Provides transparency of the ESOL program. Offers 24 hour access to placement process. Placement tool serves as a promotional tool as well as a guidance tool. Follow up from ESOL Coach/Ambassadors from GSP through class registration Higher enrollment yield than face to face process Test anxiety seen as a barrier by many of our community partners. Took several visits to campus to get registered in class. Most testing dates during weekdays for half a day. Needed a dedicated regular space on campus.

  6. ESOL Coach 1. Sends a follow-up email to each student with placement/enrollment/student success suggestions (including ESOL tech course and Chromebook checkout) 2. Responds to questions regarding classes or enrollment issues or directs questions to Welcome Center, A&R, International Office, etc. 3. During enrollment periods, checks registration records on a weekly basis to see which students have registered for ESOL/English classes, and follows up with students who haven t registered. 4. Meets with students on Zoom or make phone appointments, as requested. 5. Contacts noncredit students via email or Google text to help with the noncredit application/registration process (in Spanish, if desired)

  7. Tracking and follow-up paid off: Spring 2020 (face-to-face on campus GSP) Fall 2020 (online) 69% enrolled in ESOL or English 1A (already an improvement standardized over testing ) 81% enrolled in ESOL or English 1A

  8. Going forward post-pandemic Continue with online GSP Offer 2-3 face-to-face sessions per semester. Assess student success with placements. Adjust as needed for continual improvement. Institutionalize role of ESOL coach.
