  1. Co-creation of inclusive digital mobility solutions Erzs bet F ldesi Consultant on isability Saturday, March 15, 2025 1

  2. The relation between the societys approaches to disability and the design approaches Saturday, March 15, 2025 2

  3. Medical model of disability a person with a disability is "sick requires curing or healing, to solve the problem medical intervention is needed, health professionals are responsible for this situation (not architects, etc.) individuals, societies, and governments may avoid the responsibility of addressing the human rights obstacles that exist in the social and physical environment the "problem" is in the person with the disability. Implication of the medical approach to disability on the design Does not require change in the design/environment Stereotypes are projected in the design Accessibility for disabled people is solved through special solutions (special transportation, etc.)

  4. Social model of disability Focuses on removing the social and physical barriers in the environment that hinder people with disabilities to exercise their human rights. Responsibility is on the governments The problem is in the environment Implications of the social model of disability on the design Legal regulations to make the built environment accessible, provision of information in accessible formats, Ensure that laws and policies support the exercise of full participation and non-discrimination, promoting change in the attitudes and perceptions

  5. Human right model of disability Complements the social model of disability Persons with disabilities are rights holders and subjects of human rights law on an equal basis with all people, A person's disability is recognized and respected as diversity, Disability-specific prejudices, attitudes and other barriers are defined as obstacles to the enjoyment of human rights, Places the responsibility on society and governments Implications of the human rights model of disability on the design Disability is part of diversity. Universal design shall be applied to create a world for all.

  6. Accessibility/UD obligations in the UN Convention on the right of persons with disabilities Saturday, March 15, 2025 6

  7. Terminology - a method, a strategy - responsibility of the manufacturer when designing a product, good or service Universal design* - result of a universal design approach - relates to groups and - ex ante and social obligation as to UN CRPD Accessibility Reasonable accommodation* - the ad-hoc adaptation based on an individual s needs * Definitions see in Article 2 of the UN CRPD

  8. Accessibility, universal design Universal design (Design for all, Design for a lifecycle) Additional 360 million people in the EU Accessibility ~ 87 million People with disability Saturday, March 15, 2025 8

  9. UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD) Ratified by the EU and all Member States Recognizes that disability is an evolving concept and that disability results from the interaction between persons with impairments and attitudinal and environmental barriers (Preamble e) Accessibility as a General Principle (Article 3.) Accessibility on an equal basis with others , including physical environment, transport, ICT, public and political life (Article 9.) Promote research and development of UD goods, services, equipment; UD goods, services ..availability and use, standards (Article 4.)

  10. Universal Design in the UN CRPD Universal design means the design of products, environments, programmes and services to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. Universal design shall not exclude assistive devices for particular groups of persons with disabilities where this is needed. (Article 2. Definition) Saturday, March 15, 2025 10

  11. The pinciples of universal design used for UDM in INDIMO project 1. Equitable 2. Flexible in use 3. Simple and intuitive to use 4. Perceptible information 7 Principles of Universal Design +2 5. Tolerances for error 6. Low physical effort 7. Size and space for approach and use 8. Social, spatial and economic inclusiveness. Saturday, March 15, 2025 9. Security and protection of data. 11

  12. Co-creation of digital mobility with persons with disabilities Saturday, March 15, 2025 12

  13. Co-creation - with persons with disabilities It is a meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in the design process as potential users of the future product or service Participation is a general principle and human right in the CRPD It is a design method that strengthens the universal design method Output of co-creation has an the added value, the thoughts and life experience of persons with disabilities are incorporated in the design Co-creation provides opportunity for persons with disabilities to influence design, if design responds to their needs, it gives them control over their life Saturday, March 15, 2025 13

  14. Co-creation why is it necessary? Persons with disabilities and elderly people are at risk of exclusion from the Digital Single Market in Europe Without the lived experience of persons with disabilities included in the product development cycle digital mobility technology will not be responsive to the needs of persons with disabilities UX design is about understanding the users and designing for usability Co-creation allows you to get feedback and see how they interact with your design for effectiveness co-creation shall be continuous Mainstreaming everybody s needs is more cost-effective. Saturday, March 15, 2025 14

  15. Co-creation why is it necessary? The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge - Stephen Hawking Disabled users cannot be substituted in the designing process A design team cannot work in isolation from end-users, it leads to users and users communities excluded from the use of a mainstream product, service, etc. Co-creation is a tool to reach equal opportunities for all passengers Saturday, March 15, 2025 15

  16. Co-creation how to do it with pwd? With accepting that disability is a human rights issue With the recognition that disability results from the interaction between persons impairments and attitudinal and environmental barriers in the society (INDIMO stated it!) Co-creation is strengthened with the application of universal design Engage potential users with disabilities and those with disabilities who are not users currently for any reason Real engagement with local DPOs at all stages of the design process Saturday, March 15, 2025 16

  17. Co-creation - what are the benefits? Designing for disabled persons leads to better products and experience for all Co-creation shows us how design can be done in a responsive way, and ultimately for the benefit of the communities most affected (e.g. women with disabilities) Experiential knowledge from disabled people produces ideas and innovations that those without disability are unlikely to produce.
