Making it Work in Storuman Creating student alumni with Storumans Sjukstuga Glesbygdsmedicinskt Centrum March, 2017
Storumans MiW strategy Come Back to Storuman 1. Alumni use people who have previous experience with Storuman both as future recruits and as ambassadors 2. R&R1 survey 60% of health professionals in rural Sweden worked where they or their partner had previously spent time 3. We all know some!
The focus for VLL students as alumni For many years, the Sjukstuga has hosted medical and other students Largely ad hoc we find out someone wants to come, and we try and arrange it Very little contact with the students afterwards Mostly from one university
The vision Coordinate student placements more students, more regularly means we can have a system to host them Keep in touch opportunities to come back to Storuman Beyond medicine help other professions implement a strategy Beyond the sjukstuga help the Kommun become involved Beyond Storuman increase capacity by involving neighbouring hospitals and Kommuner
#1 Get them Offer placements all through the medical degree Prepare a kit promoting Storuman as a location for these placements Have a roster of doctors who share teaching and care responsibilities Have a plan for the year how many students, what type, from where
#2 Keep them interested Send a thank you letter Offer subscription to a twice yearly newsletter Hold an end of year seminar and party, inviting all and offering scholarships to some Educational lectures along with beer and wine Topics of value for rural medicine/ rural living
#3 Offer more opportunities to visit We can, and sometimes do, host 6 month primary care residency rotations but we can do more And can target people with a kit We can, and do, offer summer jobs, but we can have a better program for this Most medical students do a research project near the end of their course we can and do host these, but we could prepare projects for students when they have placements with us
#4 Increase the market Most students now come from one university this is a very narrow base We have had Swedish students who study abroad they value the clinical activities and use of Swedish language We have had students from other universities they find the north quite exciting
#5 Share the benefits with the region Invite other hospitals to send staff to the end of year function Invite other hospitals to contribute to the newsletter Share the appointment of a communications alumni officer with Kommuner, hospitals and others Design research projects together Take residents to smaller hospitals for 1 or 2 weeks (with one of our doctors)
#6 More than medicine Other professions (health, but also teaching) have these sorts of placement students If we can create a critical mass of students, supervisors, and activities, everyone will benefit We can have mutual learning by forming a committee which monitors who is coming, what communication is happening, and whether it is working
#7 Important relationship with the Kommun They can promote this vibrant sjukstuga as a community asset We need the community to welcome students, and to help with the communications Kommuner have nurses and other heath professions as well we could even share students, and promote each other to our students Can we try something for teachers?
#8 Evaluation within MiW We won t see many (any?) new recruits within 18 months We can evaluate if we meet targets in terms of numbers, types and sources of students We can evaluate if students visit multiple times We can evaluate if students think they would like to work here We can evaluate if current staff value this part of the job We can identify any spin off successes like new staff saying they had heard about our teaching programs We can value this as a way of bringing Kommun and county together to share ideas on recruitment and retention
What we have A partnership among eight Kommuner designed to promote innovation power in rural health An enthusiastic groups of doctors and other health professionals who like being teachers A history of providing good experiences The start of a more structured student hosting system
What we need The communications activities The kits to tell people they can do this here The follow up communication A yearly wheel for when communication is done A person to make sure it is done likely to be shared between several organisations who want these strategies
