Gloucestershire Labour Market now and in the future GFirst LEP is the Local Enterprise Partnership for Gloucestershire Set up by central Government in 2011 to work with local businesses, local voluntary organisations and local authorities, the role of GFirst LEP is to drive sustainable economic growth in the county, and by doing so, create jobs and business opportunities.

  3. The Gloucestershire landscape 28,300 businesses, practically all (99.8%) small, medium enterprises Employing 289,000 people (86% are from within county- very high) Generally a prosperous county with pockets of deprivation

  4. Gloucestershire current picture Gloucestershire s sectors with the largest number employed are: Wholesale and Retail (15.5%) Human health and social work (14.1%) Manufacturing (12.6%) Education (8.3%) Administration and support services (8.3%)

Demographic Fewer younger people, more people of retirement age. 21% of all vacancies are due to a skills shortage. 16% of businesses have staff that are not fully proficient in their job. 28% of business have under utilised staff. Businesses need to look and invest in what skills are needed. Importance of work experience. Students that do work place exposure earn up to 18% more than their peers. Three fifths of Gloucestershire employers cited relevant work experience as critical or significant when recruiting but paradoxically less than half of employers had anyone in work experience in the last 12 months.

Qualification levels Level 4 qualifications are: Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE), Higher Apprenticeships, Higher National Certificate (HNC), level 4 award, certificate or diploma, NVQ level 4 Level 5 qualifications are: Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE), foundation degree, Higher National Diploma (HND), level 5 award, certificate or diploma, NVQ level 5 Level 6 qualifications are: Degree apprenticeships, degree with honours BA or BSc, degree without honours, graduate certificate/diploma, level 6 aware, certificate, diploma, NVQ level 6 Level 7 masters degree MA/MSc, level 8 postgraduate degree PhD

  14. Higher and Degree apprenticeships Now its possible to get a degree without going to uni Designed to develop skills to a higher standard. Less higher and degree apprenticeships available but more companies and organisations are starting to offer them particularly with the high cost of University. Entry requirements vary but usually a minimum of two A levels.

  15. Its not an easy option!! No 9000 fees the cost is shared between the Employer and the learning provider. Hard work working full time and fitting in a degree. Might take longer than 4 years.

  22. We are a Structural & Civil Engineering practice (Simpson Associates) based in Gloucester looking to strengthen our existing team with bright, enthusiastic and ambitious people. Simpson Associates are currently recruiting for an Apprentice Civil Engineer to work from our Gloucester office. We are looking for a recent school/college leaver who lives locally to our office. The candidate will need a strong maths background, ideally with a Grade B or above at A-Level (we are aware that A- Level results won t be out until the Summer but a strong predicted maths grade would suffice), although exceptional candidates with lesser qualifications may also be considered. You must have a keen interest in CAD and a desire to progress a career in civil engineering. For the right candidate a 4-year day release degree course will be provided with all university fees paid for. This is a permanent position and you will have the opportunity to take on a varied workload and be involved in all aspects of projects from scheme design through to construction on site. National Minimum wage for Apprenticeships from 1st April 2018 16-18 Apprentice ship rate Age 19+ and/or not completed first year +19 to 20 and completed first year Age 21-24 Age 25 and over 3.70 3.70 5.90 7.38 7.83 This is a minimum many employers will pay above the minimum apprenticeship rate.

  25. When to apply? Have a look now to get an idea of what is out there locally and nationally Too early to apply now for any positions but start networking with employers. Doing work experience foot in the door January 2019 onwards start looking and applying, NB. GCHQ last year released their Cyber degree apprenticeships in September for the following September start. Check regularly in new year apply with results pending
