  2. History and Defining Moments 1861-Mary Peake, a free negro educates other negros though illegal under an oak tree that became a landmark called Emancipation Oak. An outcome of Mary Peake s work was General Benjamin Butler s school the Butler School for Negro Children. 1868-With funding from the American Missionary Association, Brigadier General Samuel Armstrong opened the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute next to Butler s school. Students at the Hampton Institute Frances Benjamin Johnston 1898

  3. History and Defining Moments (continued) 1872-Booker T. Washington becomes a student at the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. 1950s- Agriculture and trade programs were phased out. Math, Chemistry and Physics programs began 1878-Native Americans received an education at the Institute. Native American Education program continued for 40 years. 1960- First lunch counter sit-in in Virginia 1960s-1970s-Student demands for co-ed living, a strong voice in administration and board of trustees, and better course variety led to improved course offerings and better relationships with the student body 1880-1890s- Expansion of the Institute into a trade school 1889-The Butler School, which was replaced by the Whittier School, was a practice ground for teaching students of the Hampton Normal School. 1984- Name change to Hampton University after a 9 month study of Hampton s rapid growth 1900-1920- Focus on being accredited 1930- Hampton Institute becomes a college

Carnegie Classification and Rankings http://carnegieclassifications.iu.edu/lookup_listings/institution.php U.S. World and News report ranks Hampton University #18 in the regional universities south rankings and #3 among historically black colleges and universities. It has one of the top 10 endowments among historically black colleges and universities.
