GENERAL INFORMATION GENERAL INFORMATION 1. Education is compulsory for 5-10 years olds. 2. Over 90% of them should go to the state schools. 3. Education systems in Wales, Northern Island, and England are similar. 4. The Education system in Scotland is different from others in a number of ways.
The School Year The School Year 1. The school year runs from September to July. 2. It is usually divided into 3 terms . ( 13 weeks each ) 3. English students attend school from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. ( Mon. to Fri. with two breaks : Morning break & Lunch break ) 4. Some students eat lunch in the school cafeteria but many of them bring food from home.
Primary School Primary School 1. Most English students go to primary school ( 5 to 11 ). 2. Most schools are largely co-educational. 3. All English schools follow the National Curriculum. 4. The core subjects: English, Mathematics, and science. Other subjects : history, geography, physical education, music, and art. 5. In Wales (the Welsh Language is a subject in Welsh-speaking schools). 6. In Northern Ireland ( the Irish language in Irish- speaking schools ).
Secondary School Secondary School 1. English students move to a secondary school at the age of 11. 2. Most students go to large comprehensive schools (Students abilities are evaluated ). 3. English students ( 16 ) usually take exams (GCSEs) including different subjects. 4. Over 30% leave school and start other training or work.
Examinations Examinations 1. Students ( who remain in education ) either they continue at their school or go to a special college. 2. English students specialize in three or four subjects. 3. At the age 16 : GSCEs in 10 subjects. At the age 17 : AS Level in 3 or 4 subjects. At the age 18 : A Level in 3 subjects for university entrance. @@@@@@@@@@@@
