Outline: I. Multitudes come to Jesus (7-12) 2 Jesus commissions the twelve (13-21) 3. A house divided against itself cannot stand (22-30) 4. Jesus spiritual family (31-35)
I. Multitudes come to Jesus (7-12) 7But Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea. And a great multitude from Galilee followed Him, and from Judea8and Jerusalem and Idumea and beyond the Jordan; and those from Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they heard how many things He was doing, came to Him. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It is wonderful for people to be attracted to Jesus. But if their focus is on what He can do for them instead of Who He is, they will not follow Him for long.
I. Multitudes come to Jesus (7-12) 9 So He told His disciples that a small boat should be kept ready for Him because of the multitude, lest they should crush Him. 10 For He healed many, so that as many as had afflictions pressed about Him to touch Him. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is no attraction to Jesus because of His teaching; the scale of the crowds was intolerable
I. Multitudes come to Jesus (7-12) 11 And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw Him, fell down before Him and cried out, saying, You are the Son of God. 12 But He sternly warned them that they should not make Him known. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The demons addressed Jesus as the divine Son of God in a futile attempt to render him harmless. These cries of recognition were designed to control him and strip him of his power, in accordance with the conception that knowledge of the precise name or quality of a person confers mastery over him. But Jesus controlled the demons.

2 Jesus commissions the twelve (13-21) 13 And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him. 14 Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, 15 and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The relationship between the 12 apostles and the twelve tribes Revelation 21:9 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb s wife.
2 Jesus commissions the twelve (13-21) 13 And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him. 14 Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, 15 and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The relationship between the 12 apostles and the twelve tribes Revelation 21:12 Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: Revelation 21:14 Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
2 Jesus commissions the twelve (13-21) 13 And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him. 14 Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, 15 and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acts 1:24-26 And they prayed and said, You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen 25 this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. 26 And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles. 25 to take part in
2 Jesus commissions the twelve (13-21) 16 Simon, to whom He gave the name Peter; 17 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder ; 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananite; 19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. And they went into a house. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 They were ordinary men 2 None were theologians 3 Except for being fishermen, they brought no skills to their task
2 Jesus commissions the twelve (13-21) 19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. And they went into a house. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why did Jesus choose Judas? 1 To fulfill Scripture: Scriptures cannot be broken, and God is in control. 2 Even horrific sins serve the saving purposes of God in his sovereign plan. 3 Time with Jesus and miracle-working are no proof of saving faith. 4 Predestination and human accountability go hand in hand. 5 The love of money is behind the worst sin in the world.
2 Jesus commissions the twelve (13-21) 20 Then the multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread. 21 But when His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, He is out of His mind. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This passage will be examined in the last section

Mark 3:22-27 The unforgivable sin 22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, He has Beelzebub, and, By the ruler of the demons He casts out demons. 23 So He called them to Himself and said to them in parables: How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself, and is divided, he cannot stand, but has an end. 27 No one can enter a strong man s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house.
3. A house divided against itself cannot stand (22-30) Matthew 12:22-24 The unforgivable sin 22 Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw. 23 And all the multitudes were amazed and said, Could this be the Son of David? 24 Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.
3. A house divided against itself cannot stand (22-30) Matthew 12:31-32 The unforgivable sin 31 Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.

4. Jesus spiritual family (31-35) 20 Then the multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread. 21 But when His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, He is out of His mind. 31 Then His brothers and His mother came, and standing outside they sent to Him, calling Him. 32 And a multitude was sitting around Him; and they said to Him, Look, Your mother and Your brothers are outside seeking You. 33 But He answered them, saying, Who is My mother, or My brothers? 34 And He looked around in a circle at those who sat about Him, and said, Here are My mother and My brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.
Application Jesus came and did amazing miracles. Most will come to Jesus for what they can get out of him He appointed the apostles and their role was first to spread the Gospel but there is also a purpose for the 12 apostles in relation to the 12 tribes of Israel. We each continue the work of the apostles in our daily walk. There is a point where a person can cross the line where there is no hope for them either in this world or the world to come Even your only family will think you are mad
