  4. Introduction. Several theories offer insight into why and how we develop relationships (Baxter & Braithwaite, 2008b). Here we ll examine three such theories: attraction, relationship rules, and politeness. and dissolve our 4

  5. 1. Attraction Theory: Attraction theory holds that people form relationships with those they consider attractive. If you re like most people, then you re attracted to others on the basis of these major factors: similarity, proximity, reinforcement, attractiveness and socioeconomic and educational status, and reciprocity of liking. physical personality, 5

  6. 2. Relationship Rules Theory Relationship rules theory helps us clarify several aspects of relationships. First, these rules help identify successful relationship behavior. In addition, these rules help pinpoint more specifically why relationships break up and how they may be repaired. Politeness Theory Still another approach to relationships looks at politeness as a major force in developing, maintaining, and deteriorating Politeness theory would go something like this: Two people develop a relationship when each respects, contributes to, and acknowledges the positive and negative face needs of the other; the same relationship deteriorates when they don t. Positive face is the need to be thought of highly to be valued. Negative face is the need to be autonomous .Relationships develop when these needs are met. relationships. 7

  8. Conclusion: These theories are needed in our daily life, and they help us to have good relationship with people and provide an answer of why some relationships suffer. 8
