  1. John 3:16_In Context It s Place in Scripture

  2. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

  3. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. (John 3:17 21 KJV)

  4. Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. (John 12:44 48 KJV)

  5. John 3:16_ In Context Pt 4 John 3:17-21 Jesus did not come to condemn (judge NASB) the world The word condemn (KJV, NKJV,ESV) is also translated judge in (NASB) {krino} To come to a conclusion in the process of thinking and thus to be in a position to make a decision to come to a conclusion, to decide, to make up one s mind. (Louw & Nida) He did not come to execute at that time the final judgement (2 Pet 3:9) We must understand that judgement/condemnation had already come by declaration(3:17)

  6. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; (Romans 1:16 18 KJV)

  7. What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:Their feet are swift to shed blood:Destruction and misery are in their ways:And the way of peace have they not known:There is no fear of God before their eyes. (Romans 3:9 18 KJV)

  8. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; (Romans 3:21 25 KJV)

  9. Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. (Jude 1:13 15 KJV)

  10. John 3:16_ In Context Pt 4 John 3:17-21 Jesus did not come to condemn (judge NASB) the world Salvation had been also offered by declaration (17-18) (Isa 53:1-9) (1 Pet 1:3-12) (Heb 11:13) These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. (Hebrews 11:13 KJV)

  11. John 3:16_ In Context Pt 4 John 3:17-21 To whoever believes on Him/Me (3:16,18) believes{present active participle} present-The present tense typically expresses action which is linear, continuous, or repeated active voice- The active voice indicates that the subject is directly performing the action expressed by the verb. For example, in the sentence He stopped the car, the verb stopped is in the active voice, indicating that the subject was the one who performed the action

  12. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believeon the name of the Son of God. (1 John 5:13 KJV) And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obeyhim; (Hebrews 5:9 KJV)

  13. John 3:16_ In Context Pt 4 John 3:17-21 Why is this important? Faith or believing is on the part of the subject not the object (Eph 2:8-10) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:8 10 KJV) The work and commandment of God is to believe on Jesus, His Son (Jn 6:28-29)

  14. Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. (John 6:28 29 KJV) And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. (1 John 3:23 KJV)

  15. John 3:16_ In Context Pt 4 John 3:17-21 The Message of Death Jesus is the prophet to whom Moses spake that will (Deut 18:18-19) I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. (Deuteronomy 18:18 19 KJV) He who does not believe on Him has no hope. There is nothing they can do to be saved, without Him

  16. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (John 3:18 KJV) God sent His Son to save the world! ?

  17. For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. (2 Corinthians 5:14 15 KJV) For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died (2 Corinthians 5:14 NKJV)

  18. For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. (2 Corinthians 5:14 15 KJV) For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died (2 Corinthians 5:14 NKJV) For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. (Romans 7:9 KJV)

  19. John 3:16_ In Context Pt 4 John 3:17-21 The Message of Death Already means now! The idea is that a person is condemned now Think of this passage in light of (Jn 3:3-5) and )Mk 16:15-16) Paul stated that the living were dead (1 Cor 1:17-18 Cf Acts 2:37) For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. (1 Corinthians 1:17 18 KJV)

  20. John 3:16_ In Context Pt 4 John 3:17-21 The Condemnation (3:19-20) God has come down into the world (Jn 1:1-14 Cf Matt 1:23) Jesus said He is the light of the world (Jn 8:12; 9:5) Men loved darkness instead of the light! Light illuminates (Pa 119:105) Light exposes (Eph 5:11-13)

  21. John 3:16_ In Context Pt 4 John 3:17-21 The Condemnation (3:19-20) Because their deeds were evil There are four distinct moods in Greek [mood] Mood is that quality of a verb which indicates the relation of the action or state of being expressed to reality The indicativemood- affirms the reality of an action. It states that something has happened, that it is happening, or that it definitely will happen. It is only in the indicative mood that a verb s tense indicates the time at which an action takes place. In all other moods, tense merely indicates the kind of action being spoken about. {where in verse is in the indicative mood}

  22. John 3:16_ In Context Pt 4 John 3:17-21 The Condemnation (3:19-20) Jesus called the generation of His day an evil and wicked generation (Deut 1:19-45) (Matt 12:38-50) John speaks of the evil of Cain (1 Jn 3:7-13)

  23. John 3:16_ In Context Pt 4 John 3:17-21 The Condemnation (3:19-20) He doesn t come to the light because he does want his deed to be exposed (KJV translates reproved). Word also translated refute Every one that does truth comes to the light that their deeds made be made manifest that they have been carried out In God (ESV) And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (Matthew 28:18 20 KJV)

  24. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10 KJV) And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. (Colossians 3:17 KJV) Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. (Titus 2:14 15 KJV)
