Integrating Natural Capital Accounts in SDGs
Explore the integration of Natural Capital Accounts in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on indicators, challenges, and ecosystem quality assessments. Discover how Gross Ecosystem Product (GEP) and core ecosystem quality indicators play a role in assessing human-nature interactions.

Filling data gaps by integrating Natural capital accounts in the SDGs SDG indicator availability - UNECE Chantal Blom Statistics Netherlands October 2024
Beyond GDP The Sustainable Development Goals Focus on 17 sustainable development goals, among which life below water and life on land The Natural capital acounts Focus on the relationship between human use of nature and the size and quality of nature 2
Different perspectives Human perspective vs. Use of services by humans First-order effect Clear positive or negative effect 3
Natural capital accounts and SDGs intertwined Indicators: Nature- and forest areas on land Green spaces in built-up areas Green-blue space, excluding conventional farming Surface water with sufficient chemical quality Surface water with good biological quality 4
Core indicator of ecosystem quality (KEK) Aims to provide a summary overview of the quality of nature in the Netherlands. Play a role in SDG 14 Life below water and SDG 15 Life on land . Indicating a good or bad state of ecosystems remains challenging. Challenging to find the right values to be able to say if the indicator is moving towards the goal. Complexity of the method should be limited: broad accessibility and usability. Consider relative importance of different ecosystems: threatened or critical ecosystems a higher weighting? 5
Gross Ecosystem Product (GEP) The sum of all final ecosystem services at their exchange value supplied by all ecosystem types located within an ecosystem accounting area over an accounting period less the net imports of intermediate services (UN, 2021) Difficulty showing either a positive or negative development. Recreation and wood extraction Increase in GEP > higher value of ecosystem services. Nature valued more? Nature scarcer, thus price is rising. Socio-economic use value of nature > SDG 8 Decent work and economic growth . Positive if the socio-economic use value of nature increases. 6
Challenges Pressure factors. Different definitions and methods used by different frameworks. 7
Moving forward Maintain attention and draw attention to other important statistics. How are you dealing with these challenges? What is your key take away? 8
