  1. Intelligent User Interface Projects The What, When, and Ideas about How

  2. Project Outline Project Teams 4-6 students per team Expectations are (slightly) based on number of team members Four phases Topic Selection (Sept. 11) Design (Oct. 2) Initial Development (Oct. 30) Full Demonstration (Nov. 22 Dec. 2)

  3. Project Phase Assignments Written and in-class presentation for each phase 2-5 slides in given template for each non-final presentation Written reports in given template/format https://people.engr.tamu.edu/shipman/courses/project- template.docx In-class project group activities on Wednesdays Example: finding/discussing related work

  4. What to think about now Identify an activity to support Domain is frequently based on student interests or activities Hobbies, student groups, desire to use/learn a particular technology Tasks common for IUI support Learning about a topic (e.g. intelligent tutoring or training) Personalized consumption of content (e.g. presentation generation) Design (e.g. making a number of intertwined decisions)

  5. Once you have a group and high level activity: What are the next steps Describe the task in some detail What is being done that you are supporting? Can be more than one activity but should not be too generic (e.g. reading) Determine likely user groups What are their characteristics? Novices vs. experts How often might they use it? Identify potential cognitive, social, content and technology issues Notice what is not being asked: anything about the design

  6. Outline of Final Report Introduction/Problem Statement Who is being helped to do what? What are the needs and challenges? Related Work What techniques have been used to help before? Approach What is your design/technique and how does it compare? Implementation What does the prototype look like? What does it do? Evaluation Conclusions/Future Work

  7. TeamName: Your Topic Team member names

  8. The Big Idea High-level Design Idea (Example: personalized explanations of steps to perform a task) Goals Sub-goal 1, 2, 3, Example: Capture user knowledge & preferences. Example: Represent steps of common tasks. Example: Generate presentation based on the generic steps and the personal knowledge/preferences.

  9. Issues Issues Cognitive Issues Issue 1 Example: How to deal with distraction? Social Issues Issue 1 Example: What if there is a bad actor (viewer trying to mess up other viewers experience)? Technology/Design Issues Issue 1 Example: How to represent tasks with multiple sequences of steps? Example: How to shift between presentations when user changes personalization preferences during task?

  10. Where is the Intelligence? Ways in which you plan to go beyond the standard interface for this task Example: Select among alternative procedures and presentations for completing tasks based on user preferences Example: Adapt presentations based on user s success (and not) in previous tasks in the system

  11. Work plan Team member 1 what they will do Team member 2 what they will do Team member 3 what they will do

  12. Questions?

  13. To Do Form project teams with 4-6 members Once in a team: Exchange contact info email, phone, etc. Come up with a team name Does not have to be your topic Send email to shipman@tamu.edu providing The team name, and List of team members (include first and last names) Can begin to think about presentations/reports Presentations due Monday evening (Sept. 9) Reports due Wednesday evening (Sept. 11)
