Intercollegiate Athletics Council Jurisdiction All-university advisory body to the President Makes recommendations to President regarding intercollegiate athletic program Develops policies to guide administration of intercollegiate athletics by the Athletics Director and the Faculty Athletics Representative Consider and recommends budgets, reviews academics of student athletes, student-athlete appeal hearings, etc. Good Academic Standing Exceptions Missed Class Days and Exam Policy Student-Athlete Transfer Appeals Process
Intercollegiate Athletics Council Membership (18 Voting Members) Nine faculty (5 Senate appointed and 4 Presidential appointed); Three administrators (BFA, Student Affairs, URAD); One Staff; One AS student; One SAAC student; One Aztec Athletic Foundation; One Alumni Association; One Community Member appointed by President Also, non-voting ex-officio members from athletic department
Intercollegiate Athletics Council Standing Committees Academic Integrity Committee Examines and reviews SDSU and NCAA academic standards and support Reviews Academic Progress Reports, graduation rates, and academic improvement plans Reviews effect of missed class time on student-athletes academic performance Ensures that academic support services are provided to student-athletes Gender, Diversity, Equity, and Well-Being Committee Develop gender equity plans (requires annual Presidential Approval) Develop institutional plan to address diversity Reviews written policies in areas of athletic training, sports medicine, travel Budget and Finance Committee ensures transparency of Director of Intercollegiate Athletics budget Makes recommendations on revenue categories, tickets sales, and fund raising Makes recommendations mid-year to adjust budget variances Makes recommendations on ticket prices
NCAA Eligibility Must maintain a 2.0 GPA Pass at least 6 units per term (9 units for Football, Fall) Earn at least 18 units per academic year (Fall & Spring) Progress Towards Degree Requirements: Entering 2ndyear of enrollment: 24 units Entering 3rdyear of enrollment: 40% of degree (48 units) Entering 4thyear of enrollment: 60% of degree (72 units) Entering 5thyear of enrollment: 80% of degree (96 units) Units = Degree Applicable Units.
Academic Support Athletics academic support staff consists of: 5 Academic Advisors, 1 Learning Specialist, 1 Student Services Coordinator, 1 Life Skills Coordinator, 4 Academic Coordinators, and over 60 part-time tutors Tutorial Support Computer Lab Academic Coaching Coordinated Services with Student Ability Success Center Grade Checks
Majors Myth: Student-Athletes all major in the same thing Fact: Student-athletes are majoring in 75 different programs Top 5 majors for student-athletes include: Kinesiology Social Science Criminal Justice Management Psychology
Student-Athlete Eligibility and Retention Academic Progress Rate (APR) Measures academic eligibility and retention Multi-year score of 930 equals a 50% graduation rate, which is minimum requirement to avoid penalties (i.e., post-season, scholarships) 2016-17 APR Report: Four-year average rate for all sports (16-17, 15-16, 14-15, 13-14): 985 Record high for department Two teams (Women s Tennis, Women s Volleyball) have a perfect 1000 APR score All 18 teams were minimally above 930 (lowest was 956) 17 of 18 teams had a 970 APR score or higher Single-year (16-17) average rate for all sports rate: 992 Record high for department 11 teams had a perfect 1000 APR score All 18 teams were minimally above 930 (lowest was 957)
Student-Athlete Graduation Rates 2010-11 Freshman Class Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) is comprised of first time full time freshman on athletic scholarship General student population Federal Graduation Rate is 74% (previous year 69%) Student-athlete Federal Graduation Rate is 63% (previous year 64%) 104 student-athletes comprised the 2010-11 cohort 66 graduated and 24 left in Good Academic Standing Equates to 87% success rate 2011-12 projected Federal Graduation Rate for student-athletes is 70% 4-Class FGR Average (2007-10 freshman classes) for student-athletes = 63% General student population 4-Class FGR Average is 69% Student-Athlete Graduation Success Rate (GSR) = 79% GSR is an NCAA measure that takes into account transfers & professionalization 2009-10 GSR: 76% 2008-09 GSR: 76% 2007-08 GSR: 77% Student-Athlete Graduation Rate (2017) With Exhausted Eligibility 97%
