INTERNAL AWARDS: THE OVERARCHING THEME NMU OFFERS INTERNAL FACULTY AWARDS AS A WAY TO SUPPORT FACULTY SCHOLARLY EXPLORATION WITH THE GOAL OF POTENTIAL FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF EXTERNALLY FUNDED GRANTS
REASSIGNED TIME AWARD (RTA) AWARD INTENTION: The Reassigned Time Award grants faculty time in a semester to dedicate to a scholarly project PROJECT Pay attention to the *if applicable* requirements section! Final report from previous RTAs IRB or IACUC approval letter or proof of submission WHAT IS THE AWARD: A 1 to 4 credit course release Any permits or permissions that may be required to finish the project WHO CAN APPLY: AAUP faculty only WHEN TO APPLY: Applications for the winter semester are due the first week of the fall semester; applications for the fall semester are due the first week of the winter semester
FACULTY RESEARCH GRANT (FRG) AWARD INTENTION: Resources for faculty to seek advancement through significant scholarly achievements such as publications, artistic works, research projects, manuscripts, etc. This award should result in a tangible deliverable or substantial gains toward external funding opportunities. Check out the Evaluation Rubric used by the Faculty Grants Committee. WHAT IS THE AWARD: Up to $7000 over a 24 month time period WHO CAN APPLY: Full-time AAUP and NMUFA faculty members WHEN TO APPLY: October 28 2019
PRIME FUND Summer submission deadline! Must involve at least 2 students Must result in one quantifiable deliverable Must be used to develop external funding proposal AWARD INTENTION: Intended as seed money for projects with impactful outcomes and high likelihood of external funding. Built as an cross-disciplinary award for teams who span departments and areas of expertise. WHAT IS THE AWARD: $20,000 per team for 1 year projects Questions? Contact Erica Goff at x2456 WHO IS ELIGIBLE: Teams of two or three faculty and/or staff from different disciplines
CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT GRANT AWARD INTENTION: to support efforts at the departmental or inter-departmental level to modify, advance, or improve curriculum Special documents: WHAT IS THE AWARD: $2400 Departmental Statement: how the proposed project would relate to the mission of the department. This should be prepared and signed by the departmental curriculum committee Requests for release time to be absorbed by the department must be approved by your department head and dean WHO IS ELIGIBLE: All full-time faculty on term, continuing, tenure track, and tenured appointments WHEN TO APPLY: March 30 2020 Proposals must demonstrate how the proposed work exceeds normally expected curriculum development
INSTRUCTIONAL IMPROVEMENT GRANT AWARD INTENTION: To support projects that offer one or more faculty members the opportunity to improve their instructional skills, implement new teaching methodologies, or develop innovative materials. WHAT IS THE AWARD: up to $2400 WHO IS ELIGIBLE: All full-time faculty on term, continuing, tenure track, and tenured appointments WHEN TO APPLY: March 30 2020 The Curriculum Development and Instructional Improvement grants are assessed together and often referred to as CDII -The signature of the department head must be on the Project Summary Sheet - If release time is requested to be absorbed by the department, the application must have a letter of approval signed by the dept. head and dean
PETER WHITE SCHOLAR AWARD AWARD INTENTION: To facilitate significant enhancement of scholarly research at NMU by supporting faculty with a proven scholarly record to undertake a project that would significantly advance their work. The winner of the Peter White Scholar Award attends the Peter White Dinner to receive the award, and again after the project to present their research Similar to an expended Faculty Research Grant WHAT IS THE AWARD: $17,500 WHO IS ELIGIBLE: Full-time faculty who are contracted to teach into the award year WHEN TO APPLY: February 24 2020
GRACE MAGNAGHI RESEARCH GRANT AWARD INTENTION: To support scholarly research about the U.P. by using the Central Upper Peninsula and NMU Archives and the Lydia M. Olson Library This grant has recently been expanded and has the potential to grow again WHAT IS THE AWARD: Flexible based on foundation funds (past awards tend between $1000 - $3000) WHO IS ELIGIBLE: Scholars who are interested in the history and culture of the U.P. *This award is also available to students Scholarly dissemination through publication and/or presentation is a required outcome of this award. Awardees often speak at the Sonderegger WHEN TO APPLY: NOW! Deadline: November 15 2019 Symposium
FACULTY MERIT AWARD AWARD AMOUNT: $5000 WHO IS ELIGIBLE: Faculty who have held the rank of Professor for five or more years If you are interested in applying for this award, contact Brent Graves, AAUP President, at x1812 WHEN TO APPLY: Applications due to Departments: February 1
GRANT SUBMISSION MATERIALS Cover page Be sure to plan time for required signatures, usually from your department head or dean Abstract Project Narrative Observe page limits set by the grant guidelines The project narrative in general should address: the problem or need for the research/scholarly activity, objectives, methodology, timeline, future funding and project plans, project personnel Budget If you need help quantifying and creating a budget, contact the Director of Grants, Erica Goff x2456 References CVs for all personnel Generally limited to 2 pages Letters of support from applicable persons or entities Any permissions or permits that may be needed to carry out the research IRB or IACUC approval or a letter indicating the project has been submitted for review
POST-AWARD After you have won an internal award, keep track of reporting, spending, and deliverable requirements! Final reports Be sure to submit them on time Include them in future award requests Spending Kathy Frazier is the Controller s Office Grant Accountant. If you have grant account questions, ask her. Be aware of the length of the award, most awards provide the funds for 12 to 24 months. If you are unable to complete your award project in the allotted time, you may ask for an extension of the fund. To do this, email grants@nmu.edu and include a viable reason for the extension Deliverables What does your award require you to produce? Creative works? Publications? Presentations? Be aware of the requirements and write grants that are reasonable for you to accomplish in the given time period with the available funds.
