  1. New Student Orientation Fall, 2022 International Graduate Program in Language Sciences Graduate School of International Cultural Studies Tohoku University

  2. Important notice: Due to the ongoing pandemic, a number of restrictions are still in place across the university. Please check your dc mail at least once a day for updates and consult with your supervisor or the office if you have any questions. If you have any cold-like symptoms, such as a high fever, please stay at home and refrain from coming to school. If the symptoms are serious or continue for several days, please visit the local doctor.

  3. Classes will be offered both in-person and online, depending on the subject. Please check with the instructor for each class for more details. When you enter and exit a building or classroom on campus, you are required to check in and out by scanning the QR code posted on the doors to the building or room with your smartphone and following the instructions. If you have difficulty reading the QR code from your smartphone, you can check in and out by completing the following Google form: https://forms.gle/J52NpHmcUY1vCgDZ8 Note that you need to be logged into your Tohoku University Google account on your smartphone to check in and out.

Course Registration Course registration procedures: Register for your courses online using the Student Affairs Information System Submit the Class Registration Form by email to the Student Affairs Office Registration must be completed between Monday, October 3rd and Monday, October 17th Please check the Student Handbook for further information

Extra procedures during the pandemic: Send an email to the instructor of each class you wish to take at least 2 days before the class starts The instructor will notify you of how the class will be conducted (live or online) and how to join Email addresses of the instructors and the timetable for the Fall semester can be found on the department website.

  11. Research Ethics course: Ethics for Academic Research is a compulsory course that is held year in the Fall semester It is an intensive lecture that will be held over the course of a week We highly recommend that you take this course during the first year of the Master s program The Academic Affairs Office will inform you of the registration process in November

  12. PhD Students Requirements for PhD Program: Earn 12 credits (complete 6 courses) Advanced Seminar A/B : 8 credits Advanced Lecture A/B : 4 credits Write and submit a PhD dissertation *Important: In order for your dissertation to be accepted, you must have published at least two papers in an academic journal

Course Registration Course registration procedures: Register for your courses online using the Student Affairs Information System Submit the Class Registration Form by email to the Student Affairs Office Registration must be completed between Monday, October 3rd and Monday, October 14th Please check the Student Handbook for further information

Major deadlines for PhD program 1st semester Submit Research Title form (mid December) Give presentation about Research theme (late January) 3rd semester Give PhD dissertation interim presentation Publish two academic papers 5th 6th semester Give PhD dissertation draft presentation 6th semester Submit PhD dissertation Take PhD dissertation oral examination (Dissertation defense)

  17. Academic Portfolio for PhD students All PhD students will have an academic portfolio created for them on Google Classroom upon entering the PhD program Instructions on how to access Google Classroom will be provided by the Academic Affairs office in early October The academic portfolio provides a clear roadmap to completion of the PhD program including crucial documents, such as the dissertation proposal, and the deadlines for submitting each document Students are to submit each document through Google Classroom after consultation with their supervisor

GSICS Online Bulletin Board for Students Important information, such as upcoming events and application procedures for scholarships and financial support, is posted on the GSICS Online Bulletin Board for Students available at the following website: https://sites.google.com/tohoku.ac.jp/intcul-student- 99info-board-e/ Be sure to check the Bulletin Board at least once a day in order to not miss any important information Some notifications are only sent by email, so be sure to also check your Tohoku university email account ( @dc.tohoku.ac.jp) every day When contacting the Academic Affairs Office, please use your Tohoku University email address and avoid using a personal email address

  20. *The Academic Affairs Office is located on the 2ndfloor of the Dept. Building. Hours: 8:45-17:15 weekdays (Lunch break: 12:30-13:00). However if there are any inquires, due to the current situation please contact the office by email whenever possible rather than visiting the office. Email: int-kkdk@grp.tohoku.ac.jp *You should check the department website daily. * To access the Academic Affairs Information System (e.g., for registration), you will need a university email address ( @dc.tohoku.ac.jp). If you are not in Sendai, your advisor/supervisor will notify you of your email address and the initial password. After the initial login, please change your password for your security.
