  2. Prerequisites for Mass Decontamination Meet all competencies for: Awareness Level Operations Level Mission Specific Personal Protective Equipment Operations Level Responder assigned to Mass Decontamination Meet all competencies in this section =

  3. Method of Instruction Classroom activity (lecture and exercise) Group PPE demonstration and practice =

  4. Mass Decontamination Goal to rapidly remove the chemical whether it is identified or not. Mass decontamination efforts will also focus on controlling the crowd. Set up away from any other operations being conducted on the scene. Delivery of massive amounts of water to dilute the chemical is the initial effort. =

  5. Methods of Mass Decontamination Dilution Does not involve any solutions, just water. Washing Includes the use of soap and some scrubbing process. This ensures more complete removal. Agencies usually address this in different ways. Isolation Removing contaminated items or clothing, bagging them, and preserving them as evidence if an illicit activity caused the incident. Department SOPs should identify procedures for this. =

  6. Mass Decontamination Techniques Using a hose line or multiple hose lines Engine corridor decontamination Ladder (elevated platform) corridor decontamination Decontamination tents and trailers = Each of these has benefits and disadvantages. The techniques used should be predefined in the department s SOPs.

  7. Specialized Decontamination Equipment and Supplies Redressing of victims with disposable coveralls or plastic bags. Blankets for cold conditions. Collection of personal effects. Collection of evidence. Law enforcement input on collecting and securing evidence. Keep in mind that life safety of victims and responders cannot be compromised for evidence collection. =

  8. Staffing Needs Identify the level of PPE Department SOPs often recognize structural firefighter garments with SCBA as appropriate for Mass Decontamination. AHJ should evaluate the use of Level B instead of firefighting gear to ease decontamination efforts. Hospitals providing secondary decontamination typically use Level C with PAPR hoods. This level (Level C) would also work in the field for extended efforts =

  9. Reporting and Documentation Ensure that all methods of decontamination are documented appropriately. Report to the hospital what on-scene decontamination has been performed. Record the number of patients and type of injuries and contamination found. =
