King Harolds march towards the Battles of Gate Fulford (20 September 1066) & Stamford Bridge (25 September 1066)
Harolds Problems as King (p34) In January 1066, Harold Godwinson was crowned King of England. His problems began immediately: 1. He travelled to York to deal with local opposition. He married Edith, sister of northern Earls Edwin and Morcar who controlled Mercia and Northumbria. #MARRIAGE 2. He had to protect against invasion by William of Normandy. His men watched the south coast from the Isle of Wight but were thinly spread. #PROTECTINGENGLAND 3. His rebel brother, Tostig, raided Kent and Norfolk but was defeated, fleeing to Scotland. Tostig befriended Viking Harald Hardrada from Norway, persuading him to invade. #FAMILYPROBLEMS 4. In September 1066, his troops were needed for the harvest so he sent them home. #MILITARYISSUES
4.2 Battles of Gate Fulford & Stamford Bridge 20 September 1066: The Battle of Gate Fulford 1. King Harald Hardrada of Norway and Tostig sailed up the River Humber, landing south of York at Riccall. 2. King Harold Godwinson of England was in the south, waiting for William of Normandy s invasion. He may have been warned using beacon fires. He marched north on 18 September. 3. Harold s brothers-in-law, the northern earls of Mercia and Northumbria raised an army of 4,500-6,000 men and marched to do battle with Harald Hardrada and Tostig near York. 4. Read the details on p35 and use the KO to fill in the details for the Battle of Gate Fulford.

Homework (hand in Weds) Using pages 32 & 33, answer the essay question on paper (to stick in) Explain why there was rivalry for the throne in 1066. What sort of question is this? Read p32-33 Sections 3.5 Communicating your answer and Visible Learning before trying to answer the question. You might want to make your own notes on this as you go. Don t worry if you haven t done all the activities before (e.g. the thermometer diagram). Just use your common sense. However, follow the Route Map on p33 you will find it useful.
