CLEAN AIR HOW DO HUMAN ACTIVITIES AFFECT GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS?
In todays lesson, you will Investigate the impact of greenhouse gas emissions Understand how human activity affects greenhouse gas emissions Create a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions Slide no. 2
What is climate change? Turn to your partner and find out what they know. Slide no. 3
Clean Air Starter Task Climate change is caused by a build up of gases in the Earth s atmosphere. These gases trap heat from the sun inside the atmosphere. These gases are known as greenhouse gases. The most common greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide. In pairs, research and answer as many of these questions as you can! You have 7 minutes. What is the scientific abbreviation for carbon dioxide? What is the atmosphere? We know carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. Can you name three more greenhouse gases? Why you think these gases are called greenhouse gases? How does climate change affect the environment? How do you think climate change might affect people s health? Why do you think they are called greenhouse gases? Slide no. 4
Many greenhouse gases can cause serious damage to people s health. One of these gases is nitrogen dioxide. Others include carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide. When there are a lot of these gases in the air, we call it air pollution. Transport like cars and trucks are the biggest source of air pollution. Industry, agriculture, electricity and heating are important sources too. Slide no. 5
Clean Air Graph Task We know that nitrogen dioxide is one of the worst greenhouse gases for people s health. We also know that transport is the biggest source of air pollution. Nitrogen dioxide = NO2 In March 2020, England went into lockdown. This was to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Graphs like this can tell us a lot about what happened before and after the lockdown. In pairs, answer the questions on the differentiated Clean Air Graph Task Worksheet. You have 10 minutes. Good luck! Slide no. 7
The Challenge The West Yorkshire region has set ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Changing the way people use transport is at the very heart of this plan. In pairs, think back to what you know about climate change. What else could the West Yorkshire region do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions? Information taken from- West Yorkshire Carbon Emissions Reduction Pathways 8
Venn Diagram Task By 2030, the West Yorkshire region hopes to establish a green economy. A big part of this ambition will be renewable energy sources like solar and wind. Let s find out more. You and your partner will need your Venn Diagram for this part of the lesson. Watch and compare the two videos below. You might like to take turns writing writing down ideas as you watch. Top tip: It s a good idea to complete the compare section in the middle of the Venn diagram last! What is Solar Energy? Electric Cars You have 10 minutes. Share one important fact you learnt from each video with the class. Slide no. 9
Clean Air Advertisement Task Did You Know? By 2030, Leeds aims to be carbon neutral! In the West Yorkshire region, Leeds City Council is leading the way. They have pledged to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. But they need your help! In groups, your task is to create an advertisement explaining your clean air plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions like carbon dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. You can create a PowerPoint, poster, video or live action role play. Be creative! Include as many of the following ideas as possible: Three ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions Why people should reduce greenhouse gas emissions Benefits for the city Timeframes Benefits for the environment Benefits for health Slide no. 10
Clean Air Advertisement Task The good people at Leeds City Council put their heads together and came up with this list of suggestions for your Clean Air Advertisement Task. Use these to get started but feel free to use your own ingenious ideas as well! Double Decker Electric Buses Powered by a rechargeable battery. Higher emissions than hydrogen buses. Moderately expensive maintenance and infrastructure. Single Decker Hydrogen Buses Use a hydrogen tank and fuel cell and only emit water. More expensive than electric buses. Expensive maintenance and infrastructure. New Bus Lanes Use existing road lanes for buses only. Fewer buses required as buses travel faster between stops and transport more people. Biofuel Biofuel made from waste food and used instead of polluting diesel. No extra maintenance costs but fuel costs remain. Still creates greenhouse gas emissions. Slide no. 11
Now share your ideas! In your group, listen carefully to the other group s presentation and complete the Peer Assessment Sheet. Slide no. 12
Future Careers A green economy will create lots of new jobs. Which one of these would you most like to do? BUS DRIVER Communication Spatial Awareness Safety FINANCE PARTNER Mathematics Presentation Commercial Awareness Drivers operate vehicles (diesel, electric and even hydrogen). As technology within buses develops, the driver will need to learn new skills to use the future technology as it arrives. Finance business partners provide data, analysis and profit/loss accounting. This valuable information informs the company s decision making. MARKETING EXECUTIVE Creativity Communication Sociable ENGINEER Teamwork Technology - Initiative The marketing team promote the buying or selling of a product, service, or goods. A role in marketing might involve managing a website and using social media. Engineers work on, repair and maintain vehicles. They must be able to work calmly under pressure and use their own initiative engineers can be mechanical or electrical, as well as specialist e.g. Hybrid Engineer. 13
And Finally Think about everything you have learnt today. How can you make a difference now and in the future? Perhaps your class could share your thoughts in a tweet. Remember, that s only 280 characters! Slide no. 14
