  1. GREGORY-PORTLAND HIGH SCHOOL DUAL CREDIT PRESENTATION FEB 2023 CATHERINE A. TEEL

  2. Is my student ready for Dual Credit classes? Most of our courses are online. Make sure your student is organized and has self-discipline. The online instruction usually will not remind them of due dates. Sometimes the facilitator (GP teacher) will be given access to grades but sometimes they are not. Even with our face-to-face instructors make sure your student is comfortable and capable of communicating with the professor. Parents are not allowed to communicate for students. IF an email is sent it should be from the student. Can they handle the work load? Some classes require a great deal of reading. Sometimes multiple chapters are assigned. 4/19/2025 PRESENTATION TITLE 2

  3. WHY SHOULD MY STUDENT TAKE DUAL CREDIT CLASSES? Dual Credit classes allow students to obtain their high school credits while at the same time getting college credits. They will work on college coursework that could be more challenging. The dual credit courses are $99 per class per semester which could end up saving you money once the student goes to college. When talking to former students they say that they were able to complete their college degree plans more quickly. How do I know if my credits will transfer to the university I plan to attend? Check with your university to see if they accept courses. Mrs. Teel has also posted a transferability link for TEXAS schools on the dual credit link on the Counselors webpage. 4/19/2025 PRESENTATION TITLE 3

  4. Which classes should I take for dual credit? We encourage students to research the degree plans at the college(s) they are interested in attending. Make sure they are taking courses they need. If a student is not sure what they plan to major in then look at the core (basics) list at the university.

  11. 4. MENINGITIS VACCINE The meningitis vaccine is good for five years. You must submit a shot record with a current meningitis vaccine. IF your shot will expire before the first day of dual credit class with Del Mar (August 28) then they will not register you for your class. So you can either get your meningitis updated at (HEB, CVS, Walgreens, or your physician) or submit a waiver. If you would like your student to submit a waiver please email me or have them send me a TEAMS chat. 4/19/2025 PRESENTATION TITLE 11

  12. 5. TRANSCRIPT Mrs. Teel will submit a GPHS transcript for all dual credit students. IF YOU ARE A NEW STUDENT FROM ANOTHER DISTRICT YOU WILL NEED TO SUBMIT A TRANSCRIPT FROM YOUR PREVIOUS SCHOOL TO MRS. TEEL OR DEL MAR. IF YOU ARE A NEW STUDENT THAT TOOK DUAL CREDIT OR COLLEGE COURSES AT YOUR PREVIOUS SCHOOL YOU WILL NEED TO SUBMIT A COLLEGE TRANSCRIPT TO DEL MAR. 4/19/2025 PRESENTATION TITLE 12

  13. Be sure to go to the Counselors webpage and view the Dual Credit Link form more information

  14. THINGS TO REMEMBER GRADES COMMUNICATION SYLLABUS A student s college GPA starts with their dual credit classes. Del Mar will submit midterm grades and final grades only to GPHS. Have your student login weekly to review their grades. Also have them show you the grades. Know your drop deadlines. You do not want a F or super low grade on your college transcript. Each class will have a syllabus posted for their class on their CANVAS account. Students should review the syllabus to look for deadlines and expectations. Most will also give project/assignment/and test dates. Only the student will be able to communicate with the professor. Make sure you encourage your student to email the professor with concerns or if they are going to be absent. 4/19/2025 Dual Credit Presentation by Mrs. Teel 14

  15. ORIENTATION Please have your student attend the orientation session. I do not have dates for the sessions yet but Del Mar usually sends out notices. I have the online orientation posted from previous years so feel free to view that one as well. It is posted on the Dual Credit link which is on the Counselors webpage. 4/19/2025 PRESENTATION TITLE 15

  16. What happens after I register? Attend an orientation session. Del Mar will email and post their orientation dates soon. Mrs. Teel does have an online orientation that has been used previously, posted on the dual credit link. Class GPHS starts August 10 but Del Mar does not start until August 28. Your child is assigned a college lab/facilitator. They are required to sit in the lab when Del Mar is not in session. Payments If you are taking an academic dual credit course you will be required to pay $99 per class per semester. Del Mar will send you a bill. They will also have payment deadlines. Academic courses will need textbooks for most courses. Once the syllabus is assigned to a student they can view the required textbook. Students are required to pay for their own textbooks. 4/19/2025 PRESENTATION TITLE 16
