IVONA How to use
WHY USE IVONA? SQA guidance on using a human reader The use of a human reader can be allowed to meet the needs of disabled candidates who have substantial difficulties with reading text and who cannot access the assessment material by any other more appropriate means, for example, by using a text/screen reader.
WHY USE IVONA? Human readers labour-intensive; not best use of staff time Several pupils using IVONA on computers in the same room + one member of staff (+ one invigilator for SQA exams) vs One pupil + one member of staff (+ one invigilator) x all pupils requiring a reader
WHY USE IVONA? Human readers unrealistic and old fashioned - young people more likely to use text-to-speech apps on phones etc. in this digital age Enables pupils to act more independently encourages a culture of autonomy Develops ICT skills Pupils can read any section of the paper they want over, and over, and over, and over Some pupils don t want someone next to them Flexible arrangements - can be used either alongside use of ICT (typing up answers pupils are then able to read over these using IVONA), or pupils can write their answers by hand
WHERE CAN PUPILS/STAFF FIND IVONA ON THE SCHOOL SYSTEM?
WHERE CAN WE FIND IT ONLINE? Type IVONA mini-reader into Google Click on the following result:
Note that the software is FREE! Click on DOWNLOAD NOW button: WARNING! Please get your parents/guardians permission before downloading
Sit back and wait IVONA will then be available to open in the bottom LEFT HAND corner of your browser. Click to open.
You will then see the following box click OK And now you will work your way through the SETUP just keep clicking NEXT and I AGREE
And then once it has finished installing, click FINISH and IVONA should open automatically.
HOW DOES IT WORK? Change volume Play Change voice Change speed
Highlight any amount of text you like from one word, up to a whole passage. Press play! You should now hear Ivona reading it aloud to you. You can play the same section over and over and over and over again
