Jesus & Matthew 19 Matthew 19:1-12
Jesus & Matthew 19 Matthew 19 & Marriage In answering the question about divorce, Jesus invariably teaches about marriage Instead of appealing to the popular thinking and influence of the day Jesus appeals to Scripture to establish the foundation He appeals to God as creator and addresses the permanency of the institution created by that creator (Matt 19:3-6 Cf Gen 2:20-25)
The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. (Matt 19:3 6 KJV) Gen 2:20-25
Jesus & Matthew 19 Matthew 19 & Marriage Right after verse 25 is chapter 3. This is important because the 21st century has forgotten and neglected Matthew 19... Times may change but God s order does not Generally (1 Cor 11:2-3) Specifically ( Eph 5:21-24)
Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ isGod. (1 Cor 11:2 3 KJV) Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. (Eph 5:22 24 KJV)
Jesus & Matthew 19 Matthew 19 & MARRIAGE Times may change but God s order does not Our respective roles must remain intact (1 Tim 2:9-15)... One of the reason marriages fail is a lack of dependence upon one another. Spousal dependence is forfeited by individual independence Cf (Ti 2:1-15)
Jesus & Matthew 19 Matthew 19 & DIVORCE After teaching the permanency of marriage, the pharisees, then brought the question of divorce again to the forefront (Matt 19:7) and like before, He appealed to Scriptures (Matt 19:8) Jesus teaches that divorce was never God s original intent (Matt 19:8 Cf Deut 24:1-4)
He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. (Matt 19:8 KJV) When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give itin her hand, and send her out of his house. (Deut 24:1 KJV)
He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. (Matt 19:8 KJV) Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and weeping. When they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they refused to believe it.After that, He appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking along on their way to the country. They went away and reported it to the others, but they did not believe them either.Afterward He appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at the table; and He reproached them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen. (Mark 16:9 14 NASB)
Divorce is never to be thought of as a God- ordained, a morally neutral option but as evidence of sin, of hardness of heart. D.A. Carson
Jesus & Matthew 19 Matthew 19 & DIVORCE God was not commanding divorce but regulating it! God hates divorce (Mal 2:16) For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously. (Mal 2:16 KJV)
And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it.And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also. (Jer 3:7 8 KJV)
Jesus & Matthew 19 Matthew 19 & REMARRIAGE AndI Say unto you (Matt 19:9)
And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. (Matt 19:9 KJV) It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: (Matthew 5:31 32 KJV) Mark 10:11 And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. Luke 16:18 Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from
Jesus & Matthew 19 Matthew 19 & REMARRIAGE AndI Say unto you (Matt 19:9) There is a school of though that teaches this teaching was only to the Jews and did not and does not apply to Gentles, however The law stated that the penalty for adultery was death
And the man that committeth adultery with anothermans wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. (Lev 20:10 KJV) And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? (John 8:3 5 KJV)
Jesus & Matthew 19 Matthew 19 & REMARRIAGE There is another school of though that teaches that Jesus never said nor taught that anyone can be put away and marry again without being an adulterous, however the Scriptures teach something else (Matt 19:9 Cf Rom 7:1-3)
Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.(Rom 7:1 3 KJV)
Jesus & Matthew 19 Matthew 19 & REMARRIAGE Matthew 19 & Adultery (Re-marriage without just cause) The importance of Scriptural Silence Jesus said the only lawful cause for divorce is fornication The only lawful way for remarriage.. Is reconciliation to the spouse one is bound to (1 Cor 7:11) If one puts someone away for fornication
Jesus & Matthew 19 Matthew 19 & Sexual Immorality The only avenue for sexual fulfillment is through marriage (Matt 19:10-12) What about homosexuality? The Defense of Marriage Act was written into law September 21, 1996 as a United States federal law that, prior to being ruled unconstitutional, defined marriage for federal purposes as the union of one man and one woman, and allowed states to refuse to recognize same sex unions as marriage The Supreme court in June 2015 decided that all states should legalize and recognize same sex marriage as being equal to those between a male and female
Jesus & Matthew 19 Matthew 19 & Sexual Immorality The only avenue for sexual fulfillment is through marriage (Matt 19:10-12) What about homosexuality? They based their ruling on the 14th amendment The 14th amendment to the Constitution was ratified on July 9, 1868, and granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States, which included former slaves recently freed

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be ab (Ephesians 6:10 12 KJV)
Jesus & Matthew 19 Matthew 19 & Sexual Immorality The only avenue for sexual fulfillment is through marriage (Matt 19:10-12) What about homosexuality? Jesus was not silent on the subject of homosexuality We again appeal to the creator (Matt 19:4-6)!
What therefore God hath joined together, let not manput asunder. (Matt 19:3 6 KJV) anthropos- mankind, human being
Jesus & Matthew 19 Matthew 19 & Sexual Immorality The only avenue for sexual fulfillment is through marriage (Matt 19:10-12) What about homosexuality? Jesus was not silent on the subject of homosexuality It is the rejection of God as creator that is at the heart of the problem of homosexuality. (Rom 1:16-28)
And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly; (2 Pet 2:6 KJV) Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. (Jude 1:7 KJV)
