Jesus as the Bridge 1.From your past to a new creation 2.To your present inheritance 3.Out of the wilderness of the World 4.To presence with God .forever
Back to the Book of Numbers The Bible s travel guide/ultimate road trip. Life for the Israelites was a journey, a special journey. Bondage to Freedom Childishness to Maturity Selfishness to Service Glorifying the past to anticipating the future
Book of Numbers From God s point of view there are 3 locations in our journey (life). 1. Egypt A place of bondage that seems like security ( bad sins to acceptable sins). 2. Canaan The place of inheritance (Kingdom of God). 3. Wilderness The place of unbelief, discipline, and falling short of our inheritance.
Jesus tells us he is the Bridge The I Am Statements (Book of John) Not what Jesus does, but where he tells us who he is. I believe people when they tell us who they are. I am the Resurrection and the Life (John 11: 17-27) Jesus doesn t say I will resurrect. He is much more than the Conqueror of Death. He is much more than the Conqueror of Death.
Jesus as the Bridge Out of Egpyt He Delivers Israelites from Egypt Nineveh Each individual hearer Salvation alone belongs to the Lord.
Jesus as the Bridge from Egypt to a New Creation He untangles your past New Creation (Romans 6:4) No Shame (Romans 8:1) Desire what he desires The lines/boundaries have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance (Pslam 16:6) We like the Israelites harken back to life in Egypt or cant internalize God s mercy.
Jesus as the Bridge to your present inheritance Jesus pulls your future hope into the present. Christians should enjoy things of this world at a deeper level. Relationships, Food, Family, Music Joy Are you walking in the full inheritance that you have in Jesus and the Holy Spirit? Ex: Kids playing in a muddy puddle 2 blocks from the beach.
Canaan = Kingdom of God The Kingdom of God New Value System brought by Jesus. We see glimpses, from the Garden of Eden to the New Jerasulem. The Dwelling Place of Man with God. The Characteristics of God (Sermon on the Mount) Radical Love, Forgiveness, Generosity, Community. Service > Self. Small things with great love. Template for a life well lived.
Prodigal Son (Luke 15:25-31) Verse 31 is one of the saddest verses in the Bible. Everything I have has always been available to you. It is easy to see the sin of the younger son and the radical love/forgiveness of the Father. The younger brother was lost in the World . It is harder to see the lost-ness of the older brother b/c it is internal . Blinded by resentment, entitlement and fear he was lost in his own home.
Jesus as the Bridge out of the Wilderness of the World It is so frustrating to see the Israelites wander and fail repeatedly in the Book of Numbers, but we fail to see it in ourselves. We blames the Israelites for failing with a lack of distractions and excuse ourselves for our many self created distractions. Many of us know the right answers, but don t want to obey. Others of us want full control and live on I can do it .
Jesus as the Bridge to the Holy God We too often forget or underestimate God s holiness. Remembering/Mediating on this is the start. Aaron s Sons (Leviticus 10:1-3) General Understanding Isaiah s vision (Isaiah 6:1-7) Woe is Me
Jesus as the Bridge to the Holy God We all know deep down, even the most proud among us, that we have a problem and cant stand in front of a Holy God. We are all trying to cover ourselves in something (Success, family, comparisons, religion). The only answer is to cover ourselves in Christ s righteousness Armor of God = Breastplate of Righteousness
Fix Our Eyes on Jesus and the Cross The gospel is simple enough for a child to understand and deep enough to never fully comprehend. Grasping the fundamental truth of Substantial Sacrifice. The Cross is individual and personal. Jesus only knew love and fellowship with the Father and left it all behind for you personally. It means more when it is personal as opposed to corporately.
Conclusion No matter where you are in the journey of life (Egypt, Wilderness, Canaan) Jesus is the answer. The God of more chances. The Gospel is personal. Simple enough for a child and deeper than the ocean. Until the New Jerusalem we bring the Kingdom of God through small acts done with great love by ambassadors on a mission.
