Let us read todays Gospel. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! Christ bore our sickness, and endured our suffering Alleluia! A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (Mark 1:29-39) Glory to you, O Lord. As soon as Jesus left the meeting place with James and John, they went home with Simon and Andrew. When they got there, Jesus was told that Simon s mother-in-law was sick in bed with fever. Jesus went to her. He took hold of her hand and helped her up. The fever left her, and she served them a meal. That evening after sunset, all who were sick or had demons in them were brought to Jesus. In fact, the whole town gathered around the door of the house. Jesus healed all kinds of terrible diseases and forced out a lot of demons. But the demons knew who he was, and he did not let them speak. Very early the next morning Jesus got up and went to a place where he could be alone and pray. Simon and the others started looking for him. And when they found him, they said, Everyone is looking for you! Jesus replied, We must go to the nearby towns, so that I can tell the good news to those people. This is why I have come. Then Jesus went to Jewish meeting places everywhere in Galilee, where he preached and forced out demons. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ.
Reflection Jesus is my hero Today s gospel shows us how Jesus healed many people who were suffering from diseases. In today s gospel we hear how Jesus is called to attend to Simon s mother-in-law. Jesus frees her from her fever. Her health and life have been restored to her so she may live with a purpose. She she serves a meal to her guests Jesus has performed a MIRACLE. If you were very ill and had been bed-bound for days and someone healed you, what is the first thing you would do? Would you be incredibly thankful? Would you praise them? How would you show thanks? Mark explains that Jesus continued to cast out evil spirits. The people are excited by his miracles but have not yet recognised that Jesus mission is to teach repentance and forgiveness. Many of his followers will desert him when they see that Jesus mission embraces suffering. Jesus wants us to show repentance for our sins and forgive others for their sins. We could think of Jesus as a real-life superhero. He was fearless, dedicated to teaching the word of God and possessed extraordinary powers of healing and restoring life. WHY IS JESUS A HERO Jesus spread the word that God loves EVERYONE and that they should follow his example. He healed the sick, even those rejected by others. He brought people back to life and renewed them. He risked and lost his life for us. We may not have the power to cure but we can help people. We can help the sick and hurt feel better. We can help to heal feelings of sadness and loneliness.
Activity 1 Complete and colour. Activity 2 Think about how Jesus healed people. The power of healing came through his hands. Draw a picture of your hands and think about how we use them in positive ways: In prayer. Greeting people with a wave. A thumbs up to say well done! Drawing, writing, creating. Perhaps you could draw a picture of Jesus as a superhero. http://www.sdc.me.uk/sundayliturgy/worksheets/b-ordinary_time-05.pdf
Let us bow our heads and say our closing prayer together Dear Heavenly Father, God, watch over us, your family, and keep us safe in your care. Amen.
