Malawi Electricity Market Malawi s installed generation capacity is approximately 620 MW The market is unbundled with the following players in the market: Generators- consisting of Electricity Generation company (EGENCO) and Independent Power Producers (IPPs) Single Buyer-deals with power planning, power procurement and related contract management System and Market Operator -responsible for dispatching generation and controlling the reliable operation of Malawi s power system Transmission responsible for transmission of power from Generators to Distribution Distribution responsible for distribution of power to customers

Integration of renewables Penetration of renewable is still on the lower side and there are opportunities to integrate more renewables Recently about 78MW of diesel generators have been decommissioned, part of this will be replaced with renewables Studies are being carried out for Battery Energy Storage System, this will help to unlock more renewables like solar and Wind Renewables can be off grid or grid connected Off-grid solar come in form of very small-scale personal solar devices to larger home systems Grid connected renewables include Wind or Solar farms connected to the ESCOM network
Integration of renewables IPP procurement process Solicited IPP Procurements to provide for competition to achieve the best outcomes for the Malawian public Where applicable, the unsolicited IPP procurement process shall be pursued in the public interest;
Opportunities for SMME The off grid solar and large-scale renewable energy infrastructure can provide women, with opportunities; Venture into entrepreneurship by becoming Independent Power Producer for renewables Vending small-scale personal solar devices as well as large home systems Work in the construction, operation or maintenance of large-scale renewable energy utilities in energy generation, transmission, or distribution. Find formal or informal (intermittent or contract) employment along the energy value chain (e.g., installation; billing; meter reading; and collection). Women may also find indirect employment in allied industries and those that provide services for the energy sector, such as construction of large-scale renewable energy infrastructure,
