Justification and sanctification are crucial concepts in Christianity. Justification declares believers "Not Guilty" before God, emphasizing forgiveness of sins and the imputation of Christ's righteousness. On the other hand, sanctification involves a positional or definitive aspect and a progressive journey of becoming more Christlike. Positional sanctification refers to being set apart and made new in Christ, while progressive sanctification involves the ongoing transformation towards holiness. Both processes are integral to the Christian faith, emphasizing the believer's new life, identity, and hope in Christ.

  4. NT Intro: Living for the King Justification

  5. Justification Justification is a legal term declaring us Not Guilty before God. All people stand before God condemned under His perfect law. Christ, as both God and Man, came as our perfect ransom

  6. Justification Justification is administered in two parts at the very same time: The forgiveness of sins through Christ s death The imputation of Christ s righteousness through Christ s resurrection

  7. Justification The moment of justification occurs at the time of faith in Christ. This faith in Christ results in union with Christ. Justification is about our position . All is made new -new life, new family, new peace, new hope.

  8. NT Intro: Living for the King Sanctification

  9. Sanctification Sanctification is often seen as something we do. There are two distinct parts of sanctification: Positional or Definitive Progressive

  10. Positional Sanctification Positional Sanctification is the status of a person who has been justified in Christ. They have been set apart, made new.

  11. Positional Sanctification 1 Corinthians 6:11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

  12. Positional Sanctification Hebrews 10:14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

  13. Progressive Sanctification So, being Justified (forgiven and imputed with Christ s righteousness), we are also sanctified (set apart as holy for the work of God). Progressive Sanctification is that Christians are called to be who they already are. We must learn how to live theologically.

  14. Progressive Sanctification Ephesians 4:11-13 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ

  15. Progressive Sanctification Ephesians 4:11-13 may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature,

  16. Progressive Sanctification Ephesians 4:11-13 attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

  24. Models of Progressive Sanctification Ephesians 1:13-14 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God s possession to the praise of his glory.

  25. NT Intro: Living for the King The Power of the Spirit

  26. The Power of the Spirit As believers, we have been forgiven, reconciled to God in Christ, set apart for the work of God, and seated with Christ, already. All of this was done by God for His glory and our benefit. Now, we are called to participate in the work that has been done.

  27. The Power of the Spirit 2 Peter 1:3-4 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

  28. The Power of the Spirit Galatians 5:13-26 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: Love your neighbor as yourself. If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

  29. The Power of the Spirit Galatians 5:13-26 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

  30. The Power of the Spirit Galatians 5:13-26 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  31. The Power of the Spirit Galatians 5:13-26 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

  32. The Power of the Spirit How to live in the Spirit The difference is where we put the emphasis Thou shall not steal Thou shall NOT steal Thou SHALL not steal We are either legalistically trying to not do things or we are Holy Spirit empowered to do things

  33. The Power of the Spirit Romans 8:5-16 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

  34. The Power of the Spirit Romans 8:5-16 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

  35. The Power of the Spirit Romans 8:5-16 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

  36. The Power of the Spirit Romans 8:5-16 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God s children.

  37. NT Intro: Living for the King Eschatology

  38. Eschatology The Study of Last Things Christ s return and the study of how Christians should live with the end in mind. Christ is returning.

  39. Eschatology Matthew 24:26-27, 30-31 So if anyone tells you, There he is, out in the wilderness, do not go out; or, Here he is, in the inner rooms, do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

  40. Eschatology Matthew 24:26-27, 30-31 Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth[c] will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

  41. Eschatology The study of the seven churches in Revelation How do we live for Christ in a world that rejects him? Why should we openly live our lives for Christ?

  42. Eschatology To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.

  43. Eschatology To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels.

  44. Eschatology The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne.

  45. Eschatology We live with the end in mind, so that: We can give God the glory in all things We can be an encouragement and example to other believers We can be a light to those who do not yet believe

  46. NT Intro: Living for the King Living Theologically

  47. Living Theologically Orthodoxy is right worship Orthopraxy is right practice Orthopathyis right passion To live theologically, is to combine right worship through right practice with a right passion. Where will we go from here?

  48. Living Theologically God, from the beginning, has laid out His plan of redemption for the whole world. Our salvation in Christ (justification, sanctification, glorification) is His plan. Our lives are to be lived for Him in response to the work of Christ. We can only live it, if we know it. Biblical literacy allows us to know God and apply His truth to our lives.
