KCMS/KCMSF 2023-2024 Priority KCMS/KCMSF Wellness and Prevention Committee work: Improve wellness (especially mental health) and decrease burnout/stress for physicians and all healthcare providers National work referenced Concerns from local physicians regarding work stress issues Concerns from local physicians that seeking help for mental health issues is not anonymous Suicide deaths of two Northland physicians
Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act Enacted by US Congress and President into Public Law March 2022 (in response to the suicide death of Dr. Breen) US Dept of Health and Human Services must award grants and develop several policy recommendations including: - Improving mental & behavioral health among health care providers - Removing barriers to accessing care and treatment
National Academy of Sciences National Plan for Health Workforce Well-Being Seven Priority areas with goals and actions in each area to enable a sustained state of well-being for health workforce There are multiple system issues to address in these Priorities . . . Today KCMS/KCMSF is targeting the Priority Support Mental Health and Reduce Stigma specifically Goal 3 and Goal 4
NAS National Plan Goal 3: Stigma and barriers are reduced for health workers and learners to disclose mental health issues and utilize mental health services Action 3B: Develop policies and exemplar practices regarding requirements for privileging and credentialing in health care delivery organizations Also a priority of the American Medical Association to reduce physician burnout by urging state medical boards, health systems and credentialing bodies to remove stigmatizing and potentially discriminatory questions that may deter physicians from seeking care
NAS National Plan Goal 4: Health workers and learners do not experience unnecessary punitive actions when seeking mental health services Action 4A: Align questions about personal health information with the Americans with Disabilities Act to inquire only about current impairments that may affect their ability to provide care due to a health condition rather than a past or current diagnosis for a mental health condition
KCMS/KCMSF Ask #1: Change questions in your hospital/health system credentialing and reference letters to be similar to Kansas State Licensing Board question #13: Do you currently have any physical or mental health condition (including alcohol or substance use) that impairs your ability to practice your profession in a competent, ethical, and professional manner? Missouri Physicians Health Program is discussing similar safe haven language to bring to the Missouri State Licensing Board Current Missouri State Licensing Board question Since my last application, I have not experienced any condition or impairment that affects my ability to practice in a professional, competent, and safe manner, including but not limited to: (1) a mental, behavioral, emotional, nervous or sexual disorder; (2) an alcohol or substance use disorder; or (3) a physical disease or condition.
KCMS/KCMSF Ask #2: Form a Wellness Committee or Executive Staff Position in your hospital/health system empowered to: Ensure that physicians and other health providers who seek mental health assistance can do it in a confidential, nonjudgmental, and nonpunitive environment which may require a culture change in the organization Look for other opportunities to educate about mental health resources and decrease workplace stress points (especially with the EMR?) Consider outcome measures to assess program effectiveness
KCMS/KCMSF 2024 Plans KCMS/KCMSF Wellness and Prevention Committee will continue to look at other opportunities to support Physician Wellness in 2024 Plan for specific education and a city-wide program for September Physician Suicide Awareness Day Campaign
