Key Stage 3 Resistant Materials Packaging Project
What will You Learn? The purpose of packaging Types of packaging The history of packaging The importance of packaging What packaging is made from How to present work neatly, why it is important to explain your design ideas and develop your design skills.
Different types of Packaging TASK 1 - Think about all the things that come into your home in packaging list as many as you can in the box on the worksheet. E.g. Boxes for cereal, wrappers for sweets, packaging for headphones etc TASK 2 - In the second box think about and write down the different materials that the packaging is made from ... Don t just think about the outer layer! TASK 3 Why do we need packaging? TO INFORM TO PROTECT TO CONTAIN TO TRANSPORT TO PRESERVE TO DISPLAY Can you think of any other reasons? Look at each reason and write them down on your worksheet and give one or more reason why each of them is important.
Watch the two clips about the history of packaging ... https://youtu.be/z7lfeBEyoUk https://youtu.be/xz9UM9ZVvXY
Lessons 2 and 3 Watch the clip the clip carefully decide which are the best ideas and why https://youtu.be/ZjowvAesI9c
TASK On the sheet provided 1. Write down your ideas for your packaging what food is it for? How is it original? How does it suit the needs of the consumer? 2. In the larger box do your design think about presentation (colour in neatly), write notes to explain your ideas and why you have chosen them , be sure to consider the practicality of the packaging and the intended purpose. 3. When the design is completed look at it critically and write down three good points and three things you might need to change if it went into production. You have two lessons to complete this task
Lesson 4 Watch the clip about different types of packaging https://youtu.be/8vF51IZnDzQ Watch the film clip again slide by slide to gain more information abut packaging! RECYCLING Recycling is a huge problem in this day and age. Which of the packaging you have seen in the clip is going to be difficult to re-cycle? Watch the next clip- why re-cycle? https://youtu.be/xEFIcerI3HY When you have watched the clip design a sticker that promotes re-cycling
Lesson 5 Evaluating existing packaging Spend some time looking at the piece of packaging that you have bought into school on the sheet provided make a list of all the things that you can see EXAMPLE - Product name instructions What else can you see? Watch the clip about types of food packaging https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vF51IZnDzQ Think about the categories of packaging Primary Secondary - Transit Is food packaging different to other types of packaging why? What are its main functions?
Lesson 6 and 7 Design you own Packaging You are now going to spend some time designing your own packaging and then you will be making a prototype packaging it can be for any item that you choose but it must show all the features that you would expect to see on the packaging that you see every day ! There are instructions on the following slide
Lesson 6 and 7 Expectations for design work Use pencil and remember to only use a light touch to start with to make mistakes easily corrected Only use colouring pencils and pencil in the design phase Make your notes detailed so that it explain your ideas clearly e.g. I have chosen to use this colour for the font (writing) because ..... Your design must show all aspects of the design front/back and sides (it will be a 3D prototype when you make it). It should be detailed and enable to you display your ideas clearly use all the space on the design sheet. In the box provided show the shape of the NET that you will use including tabs to make your prototype packaging
Lessons 8 9 10 Making your prototype packaging You will be given a piece of card to make your prototype as it is a prototype it will not be full size so you will need to think carefully about how you will fit the net onto it some careful measuring will need to be done initially this stage is important so give it plenty of thought. Once the NET is drawn out you can start to add the information and decoration NOTE: there is a smooth side to the card and a slightly rougher one which needs to be the outside of the NET. You can use pen to do any written information. REMEMBER this packaging is one of the main selling points of the product so make sure it gets all the messages over that you need to TAKE YOUR TIME SO THAT YOU GET THE BEST RESULT POSSIBLE
FINAL LESSON EVALUATION OF PRODUCT TASK 1 group discussion As a group it would be good to look at individuals work (from a distance) and get them to explain what the packaging is for, what they have chosen that particular shaped box/colour scheme etc TASK 2 Written evaluation Look at your finished product critically and evaluate the end result has it worked how you wanted it to? Look at the NET did it go together well? Is there anyway you could improve it? Look at the decoration did the colour scheme work, will it be a good selling point, did you add enough/too much information. Write down a minimum of three things that you would do differently if you did this project again and say WHY Write down a minimum of three things that you think worked really well and say WHY
