Hopkins Hockey Systems D Zone Coverage Week 1
Key Terms D-Side = keeping yourself between the puck and your net SPL s = Stick in passing lanes Inside out = Working from middle of ice out to wall s 1 has to beat 2 Net Front = we own the front of our net!!! High Pressure: Once puck goes to point from corner. Strong wing pushes puck inside out, by making the D make a decision he is not wanting to make. FINISH YOUR CHECK!
Terms Cont. Backside Presence= We have to see back side threats and get SPL s to ensure we are solid in the back help. Counter Pinch= Taking the opponent's ability away to pinch by taking their time and space away. Belly out= A breakout term or Neutral Ice term of moving inside out to get wide or getting to the break out spot! COMMUNICATION!!!!!!!! Gentlemen is key to success . Start Breakout sessions: Forwards and D
Terms Cont. Day 2 Transition to Offense! Puck Possession is KEY (Make Sure our man is clear before we go to B.O.) Break Out (B.O) Turning D to O Skate: D skates the puck behind net can come up ice but needs to read the pressure if pressured pass to the open man (there will be one!) if not take ice until pressured.. D-D: Strong D gains possession and passes to Weak D behind net for the break out play that needs to be made. Keep moving to avoid Back Pressure. See Diagram in Zoom Meeting.
Terms Cont. Day 2 Transition to Offense! Reverse: D skates behind net hard with your head up! Hit the breaks and bust out the same side you came from! Again if you are not chased behind the net, you can do this if you see the weak D pinching and weak forward applying pressure as you skate towards them. (See Board Diagram) Bump: It is a defensive zone cycle pass from D-C or C to D: once we get possession in our corner you skate to weak side to elevate pressure. IF there F1 follows with back pressure bump the puck off the wall to the C or D whomever is the trailing team mate! (See Diagram on white board)
Terms Cont. Day 2 Transition to Offense! WINGS:After we have gained possession! You read the play and belly out to your break out spots! We do not leave our D-Zone positions until we have 100% possession (See Diagram on white board) **** This is the biggest mistake forwards make in our zone. They assume that our low guy is going to come out with the puck and do not play D first!!! WE WILL BE A D FIRST TEAM!!!!!!! Good D turns into Great Offense!!!!! Break out session: discuss options with Forwards and D once we start the B.O process and where we can go if pressure is read properly..
