  2. French As A Second Language (FSL) Programs Available in the Ottawa Carleton District School Board There are 3 French Language Learning programs in the OCDSB: 1. Core French Entry Point in Grade 1 (Regular English Program) (This program is not offered at Knoxdale P.S) 1. Early French Immersion Entry point in Grade 1 (This program is offered at Knoxdale P.S for students starting grade 1) 1. (This program is offered at Knoxdale P.S for students from Manordale P.S and Briargreen P.S who have so far been in the Core French program at their home school) Middle French Immersion Entry point in grade 4 Our Focus: Learning, Leadership, Community

  3. Middle French Immersion The OCDSB is one of the few School Districts throughout the province that has offered Core French from JK to Grade 3. JK and SK are now also taught in French (50%) and English (50%). Children had the advantage of half French/half English model in Junior and Senior Kindergarten (and 200 minutes a week of Core French in grades 1 to 3 in schools with Regular English Programs). This accumulation of instructional time in French provides a healthy starting point as the children transition into a more intensive approach to learning the French language. Middle French Immersion All students entering grade 4 are eligible for enrolment in the Middle French Immersion Program French Immersion Programs in the OCDSB are designed specifically for students whose mother tongue is not French. In all French Immersion Programs students study the same curriculum content as their peers in the Regular English Program. Our Focus: Learning, Leadership, Community

  5. Middle French Immersion Students in Middle French Immersion in grades 4 to 6: receive 200 minutes a day of instruction in French. (All subjects, with the exception of English Language and Mathematics, are taught in French) receive 100 minutes a day of instruction in English (40 minutes of English Language and 60 minutes of Mathematics instruction in English) Our Focus: Learning, Leadership, Community

Middle French Immersion Students in Middle French Immersion in grades 7 and 8 : receive on average 150 minutes a day of instruction in French. receive on average 150 minutes a day of instruction in English (60 minutes of English Language and 60 minutes of Mathematics instruction in English and 30 minutes in another subject e.g. Music and Visual Arts) Our Focus: Learning, Leadership, Community

  7. Middle French Immersion Students who complete grades 4 to 8 in the Middle French Immersion Program may elect to enroll in Core French, Extended French or French Immersion in Secondary School. Students who graduate secondary school with either an Extended French or French Immersion Certificate are expected to be able to communicate with ease and feel comfortable in both French and English. They are also expected to be able to accept employment, training, or pursue further education in either language. Our Focus: Learning, Leadership, Community

When choosing Middle French Immersion for your child, consider: your child s interests and feelings about entering the program the learning skills which they have already acquired and can apply to the learning of a second language your child s ability to handle the transition period while they develop French language proficiency your readiness to encourage your child while they transition future opportunities Our Focus: Learning, Leadership, Community

  9. Registration Process (1 of 2) The District s system-wide registration period is open from February 11-19, 2019. Although registrations are accepted beyond this date, your early identification of interest in the program is important to assist us in proper planning for September. Registration Process (2 of 2) Students who currently attend an OCDSB school and plan to attend the Knoxdale MFI program in September 2019 will be asked to complete a LETTER OF INTENT at their current school Students who currently do NOT attend an OCDSB school an plan to attend the Knoxdale MFI program in September 2019 should go on the Knoxdale P.S website HEREand fill out the Application for Admission to Elementary School form.   12. Transportation MFI students are eligible for busing if they are not within walking distance (1.7 kilometres or farther) If your child is registered, bus stop information will be available by late August at www.ottawaschoolbus.ca Our Focus: Learning, Leadership, Community
