Supplemental Learning (SL) SL assisted courses provide students with a trained peer mentor. Characteristics of Supplemental Learning Form of peer mentoring. Students attend SL sessions voluntarily. Designed to assist students with both content and study skills. SL Leaders are students who have demonstrated success in the targeted courses. Targets front door courses.
SL Leaders are more than just tutors!! Leaders participate in all course lectures as a model student. Leaders take notes and complete most assignments and tests with enrolled students. Leaders conduct 2 SL sessions outside of class each week. Leaders use learning theories, methods of peer mentoring, and collaborative learning to help students become independent learners. Leaders have experiental knowledge of their SL professor s
SL Leaders are more than just tutors!! How can advising help? Inform students about the program Distribute program literature Help students find SL classes Remind students to leave room in their schedules for sessions Look out for future SL Leaders Provide possible candidates with an application or coordinator contact info
What prospective SL students need to know: SL assisted sections can be found in the class schedule search (not Atlas registration) SL is free SL Sessions are typically held the hour before or the hour after class, so leave this time open in your schedule SL sessions are voluntary (for the most part)
