  2. What is the Language Centre? Expand your world: learn new languages and cultures, enhance creative thinking! Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and LAB University of Applied Sciences have shared forces by establishing a joint Language Centre. This is a centre of multicultural expertise consisting of competent and professional language and communication teachers. https://lab.fi/en/language-and-culture-studies

  3. Professional Communication and Language Use Our approach: professional language use and communication. Learning a language is a life-long process. We give you the tools.

  4. Proficiency Level B2.2 (European Framework) The level we are aiming for or give you the tools to achieve. You can communicate fluently and efficiently in most situations. Upper-intermediate / independent language user. Speaking and listening The student can discuss fluently in almost all situations and has good knowledge of culture. can talk effectively and compellingly and represent the organisation (e.g. in the media). can discuss and negotiate fluently and precisely using the proper level of formality. can give prepared presentations and describe complicated subjects fluently. can instruct colleagues effectively and take part in training. Reading and writing (Reading) The student can understand long and complicated professional texts and arguments. can distinguish between different styles (e.g. informal/formal / colloquial/professional). (Writing) The student can convey messages clearly and efficiently. can produce cohesive, fluent, and well-structured writing.

Finns only: Swedish language Refresher course: Prepkurs i Svenska For Finnish students who want to refresh their Swedish skills, especially those with a vocational school background and those with a grade 6 or lower at school. Swedish language proficiency test Test yourself and take the Swedish language proficiency test (Ruotsin tasokoe). See the link for instructions: tinyurl.com/tasokoe-s2020 49% or less => We recommend you take the Prepkurs i Svenska course. tinyurl.com/tasokoe-s2020 Compulsory course: Svenska i arbetslivet By completing the Svenska i arbetslivet course, students qualify for public administration jobs in Finland. Grades 1-3 equal satisfactory assessment in the Swedish Language Proficiency Test of Public Administration. Grades 4-5 equal good assessment. Written and spoken Swedish skills are identified separately in the degree certificate.

  8. Recognition of Prior Learning Demonstration of Language Skills Credit Transfer Criteria for transferring/transferred credits: You must have experience in using the language (English/Swedish) for professional purposes (i.e. at work). Only university-level studies/credits (university/university of applied sciences) accepted. No material packages. Skills are demonstrated based on experience. Course content and objectives must be similar to those at LAB. Official document (e.g. a transcript of records) + a description of course content is required. If the demonstration is graded fail, you take the course later. Contact the teacher responsible for the course. Studies/transferred credits cannot be older than 10 years.

  9. Exemption from Compulsory Language Studies No exemption from English courses, but personal study plans can be discussed. Finnish students may be exempt from Swedish studies by the director of the language centre: No prior studies in the language. A severe reading and writing disability. The student is required to take other studies.

Regarding the courses taught in Lahti, this varies. Please see the slides here for more information. Elective English courses are upper-intermediate or advanced level. Studying all other languages is possible to start from the basics.

  16. To sum up! Compulsory language studies depend on the program. BUT Everyone studies English. Finns study Swedish and foreign students study Finnish. AND Taking elective language and communication studies is highly recommended to become an even better language user and professional communicator.
