  2. DEFINITION It is the inflammation of the larynx Occur when the voice box or vocal cords becomes inflamed from over use, irritation or infection.

  3. CAUSES Virus infection (Adenovirus, Rhinovirus, Influenza, Parainfluenza) Bacterial infection (streptococcus pneumonia) Environmental changes Smoke, dust, chemical and polluted environment Malnutrition Chronic sinusitis Chronic bronchitis

  4. PATHOPHYSIOLOGY Invasion of causative organisms into laryngeal mucosa and non-infectious diseases Antigen-antibody reaction Histamine and prostaglandin release Inflammation of laryngeal mucosa Oedema in vocal cord Persistent voice disability

  5. CLINICAL MANIFESTATION Aphonia (loss of voice) Severe cough Hoarseness (abnormal movement of vocal cords) Sore throat Fever Dry cough Dysphagia (swallowing difficulty) Weakened voice

  6. COMPLICATION Respiratory distress Vocal cord paralysis Pneumonia Advanced throat cancer

  7. MEDICAL MANAGEMENT Antibiotic- (amoxicillin, ampicillin, erythromycin, azithromycin) Corticosteroids (prednisolone) Antipyretic (paracetamol) Analgesic (acetaminophen) Antitussive (dexamethrophan)

  8. NURSING MANAGEMENT Instruct the patient to avoid chemical and allergens. Intake plenty of fluids Instruct the patient to avoid smoking Provide rest to patient Maintain well humidifying environment Steam inhalation

  9. NURSING DIAGNOSIS Impaired verbal communication related to vocal cord abnormality. Altered nutrition pattern related to vocal cord abnormality Altered breathing pattern related to disease condition Altered sleeping pattern related to pain in throat and irritability. Altered body temperature related to infection. Fluid volume deficit related to oedema.
