Lawn irrigation basics Most lawn irrigation systems set to give 1 water/week by watering 3 times in a week with 20 minutes per section. 0.625 gallons of water per square foot will provide 1 water/week. Measure the length and width of the yard being watered to get AREA watered. R-60 house has 1800 square foot front lawn; uses 1,125 gallons/wk R-80 house has 2400 square foot front lawn; uses 1,500 gallons/wk R-100 house has 4000 square foot front lawn; uses 2,500 gallons/wk IF back yard and one side yard are also sprinklered, DOUBLE the gallons.
Water rates are based on 3 month periods Water usage is lowest for Oct/Nov/Dec and Jan/Feb/Mar periods so rate is usually the lowest or second lowest on the billing chart. The Apr/May/Jun has higher usage but the REAL IMPACT PERIOD is the period of Jul/Aug/Sept. Water rates for the current year are shown below: Under 15,000 gallons for the 3 months is $2.95/1000 gallons 15,001 - 30,000 is $3.37 30,001 - 60,000 is $4.03 Over 60,000 is $4.95
Weekly cost to water your lawns Higher usage puts homeowner is HIGHER RATE category R-60 uses 14,625 gallons for front only for July-Sept or $3.79/wk and a higher 29,250 gallons (all lawns) at the next higher rate for (4.03/3.37)(2)(3.79) = $9.10 all lawns/wk R-80 uses 19,500 gallons for $5.06/wk front only; $12.14/wk all lawns/wk R-100 uses 32,500 gallons for $13.10/wk front only; (4.95/4.03)(2)(13.10); $32.18 all lawns/wk! HOW CAN YOU PAY LESS? Water less lawn OR water less frequently. Either strategy keeps you in the LOWER RATE category.
A SIMPLE FIX for high water bills is BUY a Rain sensor that shuts off the system when there is rain Inexpensive rain sensors cost $20.95 (Rain Bird model on Amazon; $20.97 Orbit model at Lowes; $28.99 Hunter model on Amazon) More expensive ones with wireless sensors cost $79.79 (Rain Bird on Amazon; $74.76 for Hunter on Amazon). Spoke with two professional sprinkler installers in town who said they can install for $60 - $80 but any semi-handy homeowner can install in under 10 minutes. Rain sensors typically reduce water bills by 30% and for most homeowners will PAY FOR THEMSELVES in late savings after 3 - 7 weeks of no watering.
