Counseling as a Related Service Does the student have a DSM diagnosis? Is counseling going to aid the student in benefiting from his/her educational program? Is it needed to facilitate academic, social/interpersonal or emotional/behavioral progress? Does the student have a social/emotional goal on IEP?
IEP/PST Team and Problem Solving Discussion may include: What is the problem? Why is it occurring? What student outcome is expected? What interventions are effective for this type of behavior? Is mental health counseling a good match for this problem behavior? What other interventions will be implemented?
School Based Mental Health Contact Liaison to district office; facilitates the process (1 per school) Identifies and maintains updated list of students with services documented on IEPs/EP s, communicates this information and changes to designated district staff Participates in quarterly progress monitoring meetings with the contracted mental health counselor and other stake holders at the school/encourages teachers to submit input for progress monitoring reports
School Based Mental Health Services IDEA funding Provided by Winter Haven Hospital/Baycare, Center for Behavioral Health PLEASE have a sign-in sheet available at your site for your contracted counselor(s) each time they visit (Needed for audit purposes) Invite contracted counselors to IEP meetings for input, and ESPECIALLY initial MH referrals meetings- or contact Tracy Dasher/Kim Saenz 22
Funding Responsibilities Compensatory Services-IDEA grant Recommendations for the team to consider: change to services/minutes, discontinuation-due to goals being met, absences, refusal of services, other outside counseling services(cause conflict of interest), etc.
Progress Monitoring Progress Monitoring Summary-sent in by the contracted counselor 4 times a year after meeting with school rep and other stakeholders. Behavior/Other relevant data is to be kept by the school. Are there additional supports in place? (example: direct instruction in social skills?, individual behavior plans? BCBA supports?)
