What Ive Learned Listen with intention Ask good questions Follow the numbers Don t worry about who gets credit Tell your own story Never rush to judgement Ask for assistance Be aware that people are always watching Embrace the new Always help, never hurt Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
What I Believe (or what Ive learned to believe) As leaders we cannot forget that: Learning is a continuous process and happens in all areas of our lives The quality of an organization s performance relies on the performance of its employees An organization s ability to sustain itself successfully is proportional to opportunities offered for employees to hone their skills Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
The Old Social Contract Employees worked in defined, generally stable environments where there was significant reliance on the employer to make decisions Job alignment with job titles Prescribed career paths Decision-making hierarchy Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
The New Social Contract Today s working world puts much more emphasis on the employee maintaining greater levels of responsibility for: Problem solving Team collaboration Authentic and measurable contributions Job productivity Career mobility Career fulfillment Transferring knowledge Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
The Choice In life you can choose JOY or you can choose MISERY Do you see your glass as half-empty or half-full? I see my glass as 90% full with 10% in transition? The focus should be on the things we (as organizations & people) do well Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
Choosing Joy Means We Build on our Humanity We Show our Strength of Character & Enlightenment of Spirit Which Triggers our Imagination And Leads us to Solutions that always HELP and never HURT Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
What Leaders Do Our job as leaders is to manage our greatest asset our people Create opportunities for people to be great Develop next practices to complement the best practices necessary for current success Accelerate collisions (generate leadership) by giving people at all levels of the organization the opportunity to lead Understand the return on investment (ROI) for human beings is also a return on community (ROC) Help people help themselves Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
Making Our Way As Thinkers Innovators Catalysts Be optimistic in your approach For most things, somehow, somewhere, there is a better way Consider yourself a thinker As well as a learner or a doer, an idea person as well as a person of action Develop a honeybee mind Gather ideas from everywhere. Don t be afraid to associate ideas fully & freely Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
Making Our Way As Thinkers Innovators Catalysts Sharpen your nose for problems Be curious about things that seem wrong or inadequate. Listen to the concerns of others. Jot down your own concerns with things & situations Learn to play with ideas Approach issues with the naivet of a child Learn to recognize the inhibiting factors, biases or blocks to the free play of your imagination They can be perceptual, cultural, emotional or otherwise Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
Making Our Way As Thinkers Innovators Catalysts Look for the elegant answer; don t be satisfied with just any solution to a issue Nothing is more dangerous than a solution when it is the only one you have Be alert for the welcome hunches When you get them, do something about them Be courageous and independent in your thinking and persistent in the face of frustration & difficulty Never give up Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
Making Our Way As Thinkers Innovators Catalysts Continue to acquire knowledge about the work you do Knowledge puts you in the position to challenge sacred cows longstanding but possibly outmoded or unproductive ways of accomplishing tasks Be alert for the unexpected Serendipity or the happy discovery happens only when you are seeking something; opportunities rarely knock (you create them) Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
Making Our Way As Thinkers Innovators Catalysts Organize your approach Find or devise a methodology that fits your problem and your personality. Break the process up into smaller manageable pieces Frame problems or issues carefully. Don t let the statement suggest the answer Ask someone to think up a new way to toast bread, you ve already suggested a toaster. What you really want is a new way to dehydrate and brown the surface of bread Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
Making Our Way As Thinkers Innovators Catalysts Schedule practice sessions (with yourself) Find a set time to brainstorm ideas; accept them all and write them down Carry an idea trap with you at all times For some people this is a pad and pencil, but always maintain your ability to write down those elusive ideas that can quickly drift away Use idea banks and idea museums Keep a dream file of notes, clippings as a reference source for future planning Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
Making Our Way As Thinkers Innovators Catalysts Relax your mind after a hard day s work Store issues aside for a day, then come at it again when your energy is renewed. Find time to incubate, rethink and retool Slow is the new fast Be enthusiastic & confident Build faith in yourself by scoring successes on little problems before you tackle big ones Find your energy point The time of day when you are full of drive is the best time to do your creative thinking Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
Making Our Way As Thinkers Innovators Catalysts Set quotas and deadlines Strive for a set number of workable solutions to issues you are working on. Don t be a big tree with too much fruit Be responsible for your own self-esteem Feeling good about oneself is not a luxury, it s an absolute necessity Establish your own set of personal core values It doesn t matter what they are so long as you commit to them and live them Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
Making Our Way As Thinkers Innovators Catalysts Find partners and allies Nobody is as smart as everybody and the people around you are often your greatest resources Hint: Someone who brings you their trash or drama is not your partner or ally Believe the impossible is possible Establish what you want to be known for Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
End of the Day Known-Fors Here are some of the things I want my organization to be known for: Learning centered & connected to the university Safe & respectful work environments Innovative & cultivate possibilities Stakeholders in the success of the campus Help people reinvent their work to maintain productivity Great problem solvers High morale & people know they matter Value collective wisdom Great customer service and that we always help, we never hurt! Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
Key Questions to Ask Ourselves (Reflection Prompts) How do we keep people connected? How do we maintain morale = personal value? How do we continue to walk the talk ? How do we keep people optimistic about the future? How do we let people know they matter? What are the essential principles that must be honored? How do we cultivate possibilities rather than react to decline? Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
Questions & Answers Time permitting, we can have a bit more interaction Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises/Administrative Services
