Information for leaders in health ministries, Ontario conference of Seventh-day Adventists Maria McClean, Director Health and Prayer Ministries (2023)
Mission Health Ministries, North American Division (HM, NAD*) https://nadhealth.org To share hope and wholeness through the healing power of Christ
Values HM, NAD https://nadhealth.org We believe in four foundational principles that guide our philosophy and work, quoted below from the General Conference Adventist Health Ministries (http://healthministries.com): Inspiration: We believe the Word of God is the very best guide to making careful and wise choices in every area of life, including those things that impact our health. We are also grateful for the amplification of these biblical principles in the writings of Ellen G. White.
Values HM, NAD https://nadhealth.org Evidence: We operate under the conviction that God is the author of all true science. Therefore, we respect evidence which stands up to the rigors of careful examination and analysis according to accepted scientific principles. We believe this is vital in a world filled with misinformation and falsehood.
Values HM, NAD https://nadhealth.org Balance: Even good things can be taken to excess. Therefore, we are deeply committed to balance physical, mental, social and spiritual in every aspect of life to support health, happiness and healing.
Values HM, NAD https://nadhealth.org Relationships: Social support is essential to human existence and health. Positive relationships with family, friends, community and God play a significant role in personal health, productivity, and our ability to help others. It supports and aids healing as well.
Health Ministries Ontario Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Personal Goal for leaders and members (suggested) To model and encourage personal responsibility for health for the glory of God
Role of the leader in Health Ministries Meet with your team and prayerfully develop a plan that is in line with the church s strategic goals Plan ministry that is contextual and relevant. Move health beyond what is considered the 8 laws of health. Conduct surveys, and check with government and community agencies and service clubs to determine the health deficits of your church and neighbouring community. Collaborate with these entities to offer initiatives that matter
Role of the leader in Health Ministries Network inside and outside your church community Establish a presence at community celebrations Offer health initiatives as a public service to the neighbourhood
Role of the leader in Health Ministries Use Information on Health' instead of Health Nuggets as the preferred description for contributions to evangelistic series, weekly or monthly tips, etc.
Role of the leader in Health Ministries Use reliable sources for information on health Health is not the 29th doctrine and should not be presented/modelled in that manner. Be gracious in your presentations. Optimal health is a journey and each of us is at a different stage. Be careful not to transform the ministry into a burden Avoid extremes in ministry. Strive for balance. Encourage! Encourage! Encourage!
Role of the leader in Health Ministries Explore the possibility of hosting lunch-and- learn information sessions for businesses - especially if your congregation worships in a non-residential area. Consider virtual presentations If you are hosting an event where food is being served, remember to consult Public Health Ontario - https://www.publichealthontario.ca/ - regarding guidelines on serving food to the public
Role of the leader in Health Ministries Where possible, collaborate with community agencies to host a recovery support group (addiction, grief, divorce, etc.), contribute to care packages for families, etc. Use special health days in the Calendar of health promotion days - Canada.ca to feature health awareness
Role of the leader in Health Ministries If there is a tragedy in the community, seek permission to offer spiritual (and other) care to the victims/families. Partner with law enforcement officers and/or other agencies to offer other assistance as indicated
Role of the leader in Health Ministries Encourage your church administration to purchase an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and arrange for training re: its use Ensure that all initiatives are presented to the board and are included in the minutes Remember to cover areas of risk management in all initiatives. Consider liabilities when delivering presentations and planning events
Role of the leader in Health Ministries The HM team is responsible for scheduling First Aiders On Duty during worship services and/or events sponsored by the church. Please do not use 'Nurse on Duty', Health Professionals on Duty or any other title for the individual(s) providing this service. Please use "First Aider(s) on Duty". All medical professionals act as volunteer first aiders in this capacity This assignment may be shared by any individual with First-Aid/CPR-AED training. Plan to arrange this training for your team to ensure that everyone is current in these skills
Role of the leader in Health Ministries Arrange for training in safe food handling, storage and preparation. Partner with community service, catering, and hospitality teams in your church The term Medical Missionary is no longer recommended for use. The training that is provided by NAD and GC Health Ministries is called Comprehensive Ministries. This embodies the mandate of Health Ministries. Using the term medical in modern contexts can be misleading when used by unlicensed, unregulated persons
Role of the leader in Health Ministries If you are planning an event with a guest presenter (particularly one who is outside of Ontario), please check with Health Ministries, Ontario Conference (OC), before issuing an invitation to ensure that the presenter and content are contextual and in alignment with the guidelines and policies of the OC, NAD and GC Health Ministries
Role of the leader in Health Ministries Use proprietary (privately created) programs** judiciously. There is a cost attached to many of them and they come with a prescribed script. Where possible, engage local presenters who are familiar with your context. Make use of the free resources provided by the OC, NAD and GC Health Ministries Where possible, engage skilled individuals to create relevant, balanced video presentations ** Nedley Depression Recovery, Diabetes Undone, CHIP, etc.
Practices to avoid in Health Ministries Avoid invasive procedures (e.g. checking blood glucose levels) Blood pressure screening is not advised for reasons of liability and professional accountability Do not charge for your services. If you are hosting an event, plan to cover the cost of educational materials, etc. by charging a nominal fee
Practices to avoid in Health Ministries Do not describe yourself as a health expert. If you are unsure of information, offer to find out or consult with someone who can provide the information requested
Practices to avoid in Health Ministries Do not diagnose or treat medical conditions (unless legally authorized to do so in a clinical setting) Do not give medical advice. Encourage persons to consult their personal health care provider for medical guidance
