  1. Introduction A skateboard costs 62. If I have 24, how much more money do I need to be able to afford it? To answer this question, we need to be able to subtract two 2-digit numbers (find the difference between them). In this therapy, we will learn how to do this.

  2. Subtracting At a campsite, 24 tents were pitched. The next day, 11 tents were taken down. How many tents were left? Subtraction is taking away a number from another number. Let s look at an example. This means I need to take 11 tents away and count the number left. So, Count the tents left. 24 11 = 13

  3. Subtracting What is the calculation we need to do this time? At a campsite, 18 tents were pitched. The next day, 12 tents were taken down. How many tents were left? 18 12 This means I need to take 12 tents away and count the number left. So, Count the tents left. 18 12 = 6

  4. Your turn Use counters or cubes to find the answer to this question. Follow these steps. 1. Read the question carefully. At a campsite, 26 tents were pitched. The next day, 14 tents were taken down. How many tents were left? 2. Write down the calculation. 3. Put your counters in a line to help you count accurately. 4. Move the number of counters away that you are subtracting.

  5. Using tens frames to subtract To solve 26 12, first put 26 counters in your tens frame. Then subtract (remove) 12 counters. How many are left? So, 26 12 = 14 Subtract 12 counters. How many counters are left?

  7. Using a number line 36 12 So, 36 12 = 24 Find the number you are subtracting from on the number line. We could say, 12 subtracted from 36 equals 24 . As we are subtracting, we jump backwards 12. 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 36 24

  10. Partitioning numbers Let s move on to how partitioning a number can make it easier to subtract. As 46 has 6 ones, it will be much easier to subtract the 6 first, then the 10 and then the 3. So, always think about the order of the numbers to make it as easy as possible! 6 10 19 46 19 Subtract 6 Subtract 10 Subtract 3 = subtract 19 3

  11. Partitioning numbers Let s look at how we can use a number line to subtract, using the partitioned numbers. 46 19 Start at 46. So, 19 = 6 + 10 + 3 Subtract the 6 to reach the nearest multiple of 10. 46 19 = 27 Then subtract the 10. -10 -3 -6 Finally, subtract the 3. What number do we get to? 27 46 30 40

  12. Your turn Show how you would partitionthe number to be subtracted. Think about the order of the partitioned numbers. Then use an empty number line to show how you would find the difference. 46 19 35 17 6 10 19 decrease 51 by 16 3

  13. Your turn A shop has a sale. Prices are reduced by 15p per item. Choose something to buy and work out the new price. 82p SALE 15p off 60p 56p

  14. Using a 100 square to subtract 87 30 = 57 As the 100 square is in rows of ten, we can subtract tens by jumping back a row for each ten we are subtracting. We jumped back 3 rows as 30 has 3 tens.

  15. Using a 100 square to subtract 95 32 = 63 How would you use the 100 square to subtract 32? We jumped back three rows as 30 has 3 tens then moved left 2 squares for the ones.

  21. Remember When subtracting, partitioning a number can make it easier to work with, as the order of the partitioned numbers can be changed. When asked to find How many more of something, it can be answered by subtraction, even though the word more makes us think of addition. When you have subtracted the numbers, always check your answer.
