Background Liam Whelan was born in St Attracta road in Cabra on the 1stof April 1935. His parents were Elizabeth and John Whelan. he played for Home Farm.
Football Career He was a soccer player for Manchester united from 1953 to 1958 he played 98 games for Manchester united and scored 52 goals . he played as an inside forward.
The plane incident Liam Whelan died in a plane crash on the 6thof February 1958 in Munich. The Manchester united team flew to Belgrade to play against Red star Belgrade. It was caused by the slush on the runway which slowed down the aircraft; 21 people survived the Munich air disaster 23 people died.
After the crash Did you know there was a bridge named after Liam Whelan in Cabra. He was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.
