EARLY LIFE Daughter of a welder and a domestic worker Lived in an integrated neighborhood In first grade she was the only black student and the only one who could read She did not become aware of racism and racial divisions until she was a teenager Graduate from Lorraine High School with Honors in 1949 Studied English at Howard University Received a Master s Degree from from Cornell Returned to Howard to teach English
