  7. * Lesson One: Events Leading to the Birth *The Genealogy of Christ. *The differences between the O.T. genealogy --- Gen 5:1 ff. and that of the New Testament --- Matt. 1:1 ff. *The genealogy of Gen 5 the repeated phrase "and he Died" can well be noted. *The genealogy of Gen 5 gives the history of the Adam family. *Yet the genealogy of Matthew 1 the subject is not one of death but rather one of Birth and New Life. * The genealogy in Matt. 1 gives the history of the generation of Jesus Christ. *Matthew's account rings loud with the fulfillment of those promises which God had made in the O.T. *Matthew's account is written primarily to Jewish readers and shows the fact that Jesus Christ is indeed the promised Messiah. *Matthew is indeed a bridge builder between the O.T. and the New. Slide # 7 8/19/2025 From Birth thru Great Galilean Ministry

  8. * Lesson One: Events Leading to the Birth *The difference between the genealogy of Luke 3:23 ff. and that of Matthew 1:1 ff. *Matthew goes from Abraham Down to Christ. * Luke goes UP from Christ to God. *They are identical from Abraham to David. *Matthew then follows David's descendants through Solomon to Shealtiel and Zerubbabel. *Luke follows David's descendants through Nathan to Shieltiel and Zerubbabel. *Checking History you will note that the 3 generations of Joram are left out. * This has led many to believe that it is the result of the marriage with the Daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, the Sidonian idolater. *Athaliah followed in the wicked ways of her father and mother. Slide # 8 8/19/2025 From Birth thru Great Galilean Ministry

  9. * Lesson One: Events Leading to the Birth *Luke's account gives the genealogy of Christ thru Mary rather than that of Joseph who would be the legal foster- father of Christ... cf Luke 3:23. *Heli is an ancestor of Mary --- vrs. 23. *Joseph did not have two fathers, hence Heli is his father - in - Law. the natural father of Mary. *Mary is not mentioned by name, for it was very uncommon for women to be named in the families genealogies. *Matthew mentions the name of four women in his account. *vrs 3 --- Tamar *vrs 5 --- Ruth *vrs 6 --- Bathsheba named indirectly *vrs 16 --- Mary Slide # 9 8/19/2025 From Birth thru Great Galilean Ministry

  10. * Lesson One: Events Leading to the Birth *Matthew places his genealogy at the beginning of the book, Luke places his at the conclusion of Christ's baptism by John the Baptist and prior to the temptation of Christ by Satan....cf ---- Luke 3:21- 4:13. *It is believed to show that both Adam and Christ being son's of God but one failing the Father and the other glorifying the Father in Heaven. *Since both the genealogies of Mary and Joseph show a distinct linage from David, we must conclude that Jesus had the legal right to the Throne of David --- cf Lk. 1:32-33. Slide # 10 8/19/2025 From Birth thru Great Galilean Ministry

  11. * Lesson One: Events Leading to the Birth *Since Matthew's account is written primarily for the Jews of a man who bursts on the scene and claims to be a king, the immediate question that needs to be answered is "where is proof of His kingship?" *This Matthew immediately does, by giving four essential credentials of the King Himself --- Jesus Christ. cf Matt 1-2. *The genealogy of Jesus Christ. *Christ's human heredity --- Matt. 1:1-17. *Christ's Divine heredity --- vrs 18-25. *The homage paid to the King --- Matt. 2:1-12 *The hostility against the King --- Matt 2:13-18. *The humility of the King --- Matt. 2:19-23. Slide # 11 8/19/2025 From Birth thru Great Galilean Ministry

  12. * Lesson One: Events Leading to the Birth *The human linage of Christ --- Matthew's account. *Promise of the Messiah made to David --- II Sam. 7:16 cf John 7:42. *Also promised to Abraham --- Gen 22:18 cf Gal 3:16. *Isaac & Jacob & Judah mentioned here because they were the heads of the tribes for whom Matthew was especially writing this gospel. *Perez and Zerah are twins of Tamar {who was the incestuous daughter-in-Law of Judah --- Gen 38:1-6. *Rahab was the heathen and the harlot of Jericho cf --- Joshua 2:1-24 ; 6:17-25. *Included amongst the faithful in Heb. 11:31. *Cited as a example ---- James 2:25. *Ruth was the heathen Moabitess --- cf Ruth 1:4 Slide # 12 8/19/2025 From Birth thru Great Galilean Ministry

  13. * Lesson One: Events Leading to the Birth *These first fourteen mentioned Abraham to Jesse are all patriarchs. *The next fourteen are all Kings beginning with David to Josiah. *David needs to be counted twice, first as a patriarch and second as a King in order to make up the second fourteen, for without this there would only be 13. --- cf vrs 17. *Solomon was born to Bathsheba, not mentioned by name since she was an adulteress. *Solomon a wise but foolish king brought in a lot of idolatrous worship into Judah. *Rehoboam God cut off ten tribes of his kingdom. Slide # 13 8/19/2025 From Birth thru Great Galilean Ministry

  14. * Lesson One: Events Leading to the Birth *The next fourteen Jechoniah to Christ. *Jechoniah was a King but became a citizen under the Babylonian Captivity. *There are two possible explanasion s of Shealtiel and Zerubbabel of Matthew's account and that of Luke's account. *Jechoniah may have been the natural father of Shealtiel, whilst Neri the legal father of Shealtiel --- Deut 25:5-10 ; Matt. 22:24 *or Luke's Shealtiel and Zerubbabel could be totally different people from that of Matthew's account. *Jesus means "Savior" * Christ is a title and means Anointed One. * Only prophets, priests and kings were ever anointed. * Jesus was all three. Slide # 14 8/19/2025 From Birth thru Great Galilean Ministry

  15. * Lesson One: Events Leading to the Birth *The Jewish people to whom this was written were very fond of this type of grouping and could be seen as Jewish symbolism --- denoting perfect periods. *Seven being God and Creation combined. *Three being symbolism of the Godhood. *Four being the number symbolic of Creation and the world. *Two symbolizes strength --- cf Eccl. 4:9-11. * Thus 7 x 2 = 14 (perfection in Strength) ---- {Homer Hailey Revelation p. 42-45} Slide # 15 8/19/2025 From Birth thru Great Galilean Ministry

  20. * Lesson One: Events Leading to the Birth *Comparing Luke s and Matthew s Accounts: *1. Matthew goes from Abraham DOWN to Christ. *2. Luke goes UP from Christ to God. *3. Matthew and Luke are Identical from Abraham to David. *4. Matthew follows David's descendants through Solomon to Shelatiel and Zerubbabel. *5. Luke follows David's descendants through Nathan to Shealtiel and Zerubbabel. Slide # 20 8/19/2025 From Birth thru Great Galilean Ministry

  21. * Lesson One: Events Leading to the Birth *6. Joram 's descendants for three generations are left out, probably because his wife was Ahab's daughter by Jezebel, the Sidonian idolater . *7. Josiah was the grand-father of Jechoniah. *8. Obviously, Shealtiel did not have two fathers . Since Jechoniah was his father (I Chron. 3:17), Neri would have been his father-in-Law, legal father. *9. Obviously, Joseph did not have two fathers; hence, Heli was his father-in-law, Old Testament legal father, and the natural father of Mary. *Since Jesus Christ was "supposed (Lk . 3:23) only to be the son of Joseph, his blood line back to David and Abraham must come through his mother, although mothers 'names were included in genealogies. Slide # 21 8/19/2025 From Birth thru Great Galilean Ministry

  22. * Lesson One: Events Leading to the Birth *Hence in spite of the circumstances of his birth (begotten by the Holy Spirit [Luke 1:35]) and born of a virgin (Isa. 7:14 ; Lk . 1:27), *He is proven to have been "born of the seed of David according to the flesh" (Rom. 1:3), for God had sworn to David that "of the fruit of his loins He would set one up upon his throne" (Acts 2:30). *God fulfills His promises. ***** Chart copied from Diagram done by Buddy Payne **** Slide # 22 8/19/2025 From Birth thru Great Galilean Ministry

  23. * Lesson One: Events Leading to the Birth *Prophesy of Zachariah --- Lk. 1:57-80 *Important to note that Zacharia is not speaking of John the Baptist here but rather of Jesus Christ. *His praise is directed to "one of the house of David". vrs 69. *Both Elizabeth and Zacharia were from the tribe of Levi and the family of Arron cf --- Lk. 1:5. *Thus John their son would be a Levite and the praise that was given by His father is of another.
