  1. Lesson 14 Life of Christ part 3

  2. Life of Christ, part 3 Last Week Lesson 14 John 17

  3. What one word would you use as the main though in this chapter? UNITY

  4. John 17 overview Jesus prayer concerning himself (vs 1-5) Praying that the crowning act of His earthly ministry may indeed lead to the glorious conclusion which God has intended His prayer for his immediate apostles (vs 6-19) Praying that they may be protected and upheld in their mission, which is the continuation of His own

  5. John 17 overview His prayer for all disciples, present and future (vs 20-26) Praying that they may be unified as He and His Father are united in spiritual oneness Jesus has finished His final words to His apostles before His crucifixion What better way to close than with prayer!!

  6. Jesus prays for Himself John 17:1-5 Notice Jesus speaking in third person in vs 1-3 the hour has come Glorify Your Son Glorify to make glorious, or cause so to appear Glory very great praise, honor, or distinction Jesus would be glorified and in so doing would glorify the Father That Your Son may glorify You He will do this by completing the great plan of the Father from before the foundations of the world, the plan to save mankind; the Father will glorify Him by the resurrection

  7. Jesus prays for Himself John 17:1-5 vs 2 "as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. The key to solving most religious error is to recognize Jesus as King, and that as King He has ALL authority. We only do what the King has authorized.

  8. Jesus prays for Himself Jesus came to give eternal life to as many as would come to Him in obedience In accepting this eternal life they would know the Father as the one true God and Jesus as His Son He has completed His mission on the earth and in so doing has glorified the Father (v 4) He speaks knowing His death will happen in a few hours We glorify God by doing the work He has given us to do. The attitude of the Pharisees here shows the folly of supposing that evidence of any kind can persuade men whose purpose is to disbelieve.

  9. Jesus prays for Himself Jesus asks the Father to restore Him to the glory He had with Him before [coming to the earth] Three implications (v 5) Jesus existed before coming into the world He had divine glory in that existence He expected to return to heaven and that glory again Sideline thought Was Jesus known as Jesus before He came to earth? Now?? vs 1 - Glorify Your Son vs 5 "And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

  10. Jesus prays for His apostles (vs 6-19) John 17:6-10 Jesus had made know the Father to the apostles (John 14:7-11) The Father gave them to Jesus Jesus taught them the words that came from His Father (v 7-8) They believed Jesus had come from the Father (v 8; 16:28-30)

  11. Jesus prays for His apostles Jesus was praying specifically for these men (v 9) They belonged to Him, and all that is His is the Father s and vice versa (v 10) This is possible only because both are deity John 10:30 "I and My Father are one."

  12. Jesus prays for His apostles John 17:11-19 Jesus was leaving this world (v 11) The apostles would still be in the world Thus, His special prayer for them

  13. Jesus prays for His apostles Jesus prays Holy Father, keep them (v 11) Jesus had been with them He was leaving He prayed to the Father to protect them Jesus prays for unity among the apostles He uses His relationship with the Father as a pattern (v 11) One had been lost (Judas) by his own choice (v 12)

  14. Jesus prays for His apostles Jesus says again He is leaving them (v 13) He asks God to care for them Give them joy The world will hate them They will be left in the world without Him being with them Give them strength to overcome the evil one

  15. Jesus prays for His apostles Jesus prays for their sanctification (v 17) Set them apart for special service to God Set them apart to teach the word Set them apart by the word The word is truth John 8:32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Free from sin

  16. Jesus prays for His apostles We can be in the world but not of the world John 17:12 "While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept John 17:14 "I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

  17. Jesus prays for future disciples John 17:20-26 Jesus indirectly refers to the commission He would later give His apostles There would be others who would believe on Him because of their word As He prayed for unity within the apostles, He immediately does the same for future believers Unity comparable to Us (v 21) Unity that would cause the world to believe

  18. Jesus prays for future disciples Jesus was crowned with glory because of the things He suffered (Hebrews 2:9-10) He has shared that glory with the apostles It was for the purpose of unity It was to show the world that Jesus came from the Father It was shown by the Father s love for them

  19. Jesus prays for future disciples Jesus prayed that those given to Him may be with Him in heaven (v 24) There we will see Him in the glory He had before the foundations of the world (2 Thessalonians 2:13-14) The world did not know the Father (v 25) Jesus knew the Father He showed the Father to the apostles (14:9) The apostles will declare the Father to the world Jesus prays that the love of the Father would be in them 14:3 "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. vs 24 "Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am

  20. Question What did Jesus expect the Father to do with this prayer? Was the prayer just to make Jesus (and the apostles) feel good about the future mission? Jesus believed His Father in heaven would hear His prayer and would act upon it! He believed "God works."

  21. Ending With this the discourse ends He has tried to comfort them over Judas betrayal His leaving Peter s denials (and all of them fleeing) His final words of encouragement before His death His final words before He is changed after His resurrection A prayer for them and for us
